  1. I don't think I'd call them heroes, but it is quite sweet of them.

  2. I don't think they're heroes. You could say they're nice or kind to do that, but I wouldn't be so quick to give them that label.

On a side note, I think the word hero is so overused that it means little now.

Now, I can understand if you're Matilda or her mother, you might look at those guys as heroes.

But I grow tired, for example, when I hear news talking heads going on and on about how cops who kept a woman from jumping off an overpass are heroes. They're not because that's part of their job. They're paid to do that.

A true hero, for example, is someone who does something he/she doesn't have to, and often puts themselves at risk. They don't do it for money or reward. The only thing that can be deemed "selfish" about such a hero is that they can't tolerate just standing by, and their conscience spurs them to act. So they have to do it because they couldn't stand themselves if they didn't do it.

I still remember the Lakers organization one time gave 10,000 dollars to a charity. 10,000 dollars?? That's it? That would be the equivalent of me giving, say, a couple dollars to charity. One of their players could play for about 10 minutes and earn that much money in salary. So for the whole organization to donate "that much" money is absurd.

I'm not saying they have to give millions. Sure, they didn't have to give anything at all. But one of their players would go on a trip to Vegas and blow that much in a day.

Anyway, I think the true heroes in the world are the ones who do great and amazing things, risking their lives for others, but don't get their names in the paper.

For sure, an athlete is NOT a hero for dunking a ball, hitting a homerun, making an "incredible" play.

Sorry for the tangent, but to answer your question. There are many actors and athletes who donate to good causes, but the TV news world being what it is, that kind of news doesn't bring the swarm of bees that a story on a star actor driving drunk will.
