Arenal Volcano Tours?

We are staying in La Fortuna for 2 nights and want to go to the volcano. Is it better to take a tour - any recommendations- or just hire a taxi to take us there and drop us off?

If it's your first time I would take the tour. They will give you information you wouldn't know on your own. It's beautiful. Enjoy! Next time you'll be a pro and can get dropped off.

I would take a tour.  There are many to choose from and you can mix in some adventure with some hot springs and such.  When you say "take us there" do you mean to the National Park?  If you walk around town you will see lots of "tours."  Shop around, check prices, check the quality of the media being used for advertising.  You should be able to find a tour that matches your price range with your expectations of what you want to see.  You can also stay outside of La Fortuna closer to the volcano and be able to watch lava from your hotel room.  Check out Hotel Arenal Paraiso...

I went on a tour with my hostel.  They charged $25 and they took us in the rainforest.  They started off by driving through and pointing out the birds and monkeys.  Then we went into the jungle and showed us the different foliage.  We walked along beautiful scenery and ended up at a point where you can see the volcano perfectly.  If its a clear night, not cloudy, you will see hot red molten lava come out of the volcano. Its really cool.

Then after this, you get to go to Baldi Hotsprings with is SOOO beautiful!!! I mean, it is just exotic and excellent and you'll love it.  They charge $25 just for that and you get it free through the tour, so its a great deal!
