  1. You have to understand that there's nothing 'mysterious' about 3 independent sources arriving at the same date, because they've done nothing of the sort. The date of December 21st 2012 is the end of a cycle of the Mayan calendar. Various other cranks have jumped on the bandwagon to attach their ridiculous predictions to that date.

I'm interested to note the prediction of captan_badass about a comet  with a 26,000 year orbit which is due to come close to earth on December 30th 2012. This ia a new one on me. Crank websites + chinese whispers = total rubbish

  2. somewhat. december, sunday 23 2012. its not a supersticious day like 6/6/06 its just a random day. and the chinese are predicting it too. but yet again. there arent any signs that the world would end any time soon. but i guess we'll have to wait.

  3. Precognition is a violation of one of the two most fundamental laws that govern the universe.

Predictions about the events that will occur in deterministic causal chains are ordinarily (or atleast *can* be) very accurate; nondeterministic causal chains, much less so, but they can still be predicted, many times correctly, based on past observations.

Those sorts of predictions, though, are really nothing more than educated guesses.  Actual knowledge of the future (and its corollary, the altering of [or sending information into] the past) is prohibited by nature and can never occur.

  4. Pure nonsense.  The world isn't going to end, magnetic polar reversal or not.

It's just another prediction of doom in a long line of failed predictions of doom.

FYI:  65536  = 2^16.  It's hardly a random number.  But maybe you were being sarcastic.

  5. No, I'm not scared in the slightest.

Scientists don't expect anything out of the ordinary to happen in the year 2012, or specifically on the date December 21, other than the solstice, which happens every year.

None of the "predicted" happenings for 2012 hold up under close scrutiny. "Planet X" and "Nibiru" simply don't exist. The Mayan calendar ends a cycle, but there were no predictions of the end of the world. The Sun doesn't line up with the galactic centre; it's 6 degrees off. No asteroids or comets are actually predicted to hit Earth.

All of this stuff was put together by sensationalists in order to promote their books and TV shows, and shamelessly promoted by the History Channel. Don't take any of it seriously!

  6. I agree with Linlyons, its the same reason why Microsoft Excel rows end at 65536, completely random number.

  7. the world is not going to end in 2012. There is no scientific proof, or evidence for that matter. People think that the world is going to end because that’s when the mayan calendar ends. If this is why the world is going to end then we might as well say that the world is going to end on December 31 2009 because no calendars have been printed for 2010 yet. Its an absurd idea that has been shamelessly endorsed by yahoo, google, the news media, and even the history channel.

that’s the short answer. Here’s the long one:

There are a couple theories on how the world will supposedly end in 2012. I will give you examples, and shoot the ideas down for you.

The most popular idea is that planet x, is going to come to the earth and block the sunlight. First of all, it is not “the planet x” it’s “a planet x”. planet x is a generalized term that caught on a couple hundred years ago that was used to describe unknown planets of our solar system. Neptune was once a planet x. astronomers calculated that the orbital period of Uranus was affected by another object, probably a planet, that was beyond Uranus. They calculated the orbital period of this planet x, and found where it would be at a specific time. They saw the planet, and it was no longer considered planet x. it got its name- Neptune. Scientists miscalculated the orbital period of Neptune being affected by another planet, but by chance their miscalculations revealed Pluto. This icy world was also considered planet x, and was first seen in 1930. It was considered a planet until 2006 when it was demoted to a dwarf planet, and now a plutoid. Sedna, quaour, eris, and ceris were all considered planet x’s, and were eventually classified as plutoids.

Now that you know the true definition of a planet x, lets talk about the scientific improbabilities of a planet x that is going to travel all the way to the earth. First of all, I have gone to college, and received a PhD in astronomy and astrophysics and I have never heard of nibiru. According to recent data, there may be another planet larger than earth lying in the kupiter belt. this planet would have to be more than 5 light years away. So if it were to suddenly travel at light speed, the fastest possible speed an object can achieve, it would take the planet 5 years to get here. 2012 is less than 4 years away. Besides the mathematic problems, there are scientific problems too. First of all, there is no force that would make the planet travel at light speed. Second, it would have to get through the beatings of countless asteroids, and the gravitational pull of the four gas giants of the outer solar system - Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, and Jupiter. I wouldn’t be surprised if it became a moon of one of those planets on its way. Anyway, if it did get through the gas giants, it has to get through another asteroid belt, as well as mars. It will most likely be shot into outer space, or into the sun where it will burn up. If it did manage, by some miracle, to get in front of the earth, it would be in a different gravitational shell. It would be closer, which means it will orbit the sun faster than the earth, therefore it will move away from us. So that’s not going to happen.

Another theory is about the asteroid. Its going to hit earth or whatever. Here’s why it won’t work: the asteroid has to take the same path to get to the earth as planet x, but it is even smaller, and will take more of a beating. If it got through everything, it would just crash into our moon probably. If it did come to earth, the atmosphere would burn it up so much that there would probably be nothing left for it to hit earth.

All other theories are just as absurd. Nothing is going to happen in 2012, except for the same things that could happen any other year.

  8. no the history channel is known for bad history and very bad information.

  9. no way! I watched that too, and no because theres been many end of the world prediction and has never happened obliviously.

the reason of the 2012 prediction is the Mayans, bible code, and a comet that comes only every 26,000 years is scheduled to come close December 30th 2012. but still theres miles more evidence that it won't happen vs it will happen

  10. no.

do you have any *credible* sources?

  11. No.

And you are posting this in the wrong section. It blongs in Myths andFolklore, not a science forum.

  12. No. It's a bunch of supersticous c**p.

  13. Not really

  14. I am scared of 2012, but there is nothing I can do about it. What concerns me is the polar shift. It has already started. The North pole is moving along near 143 deg E. The South pole is also moving along near 143 deg E. And on 23 Dec the two poles will meet and Earth will have one pole, not two. The Earth will be unable to comprehend the illogicity of the situation, causing the globe to shatter.

  15. I watched 3 minutes and 50 seconds of that documentary on youtube and counted 16 factual errors or misrepresentations.  Maybe the one you saw was a new documentary.  As long as the History Channel pulls lots of viewers with this garbage, they will keep airing it and more makers of bogus documentaries will find an eager customer in the History Channel.  It has now become not much more reliable than a supermarket tabloid.

Claims are made that such things are predicted.  When the so-called predictions are analyzed without the obvious twisting and selective analysis, they break down.  This all began with the supposed Mayan prediction.  Guess what.  The Mayans never predicted ANY kind of disaster for 2012.  And so what if they did?  They didn't know diddly squat about the future of this planet.  These other tag-along predictions have been wrenched into the myth to give it more muscle.  I don't know specifically about the others, but I'll bet they are just as bogus as the Mayan one.

I hesitate to inquire into what this Internet Webbot is.

Edit: No, the poles are NOT going to shift.  The reversal of the earth's magnetic poles takes thousands of years.  And you insist that these ancient sources both predicted the day and year of this disaster.  Prove it.  You can't, because you have no idea at all what the original sources said.  Some quack making money off of a gullible public said it.  Did you check the guy's credentials?  Doesn't have any, does he?

These people make their living because people like you can't wait to be the first around the water cooler or at a party, to WOW everybody with their knowledge of deep disturbing secrets about the end of the world or the moon landings being hoaxed or the US government being behind the 9-11 attacks.  It's an ego trip that people like you can't resist.  You came here trying to scare people.  In the process, you scare kids, so not only are you grossly misinformed but you are a bully -- thanks to the History Channel's utter lack of programming standards and your need to feel like a big shot.

No, Steele, the Big Bad World-Destroying Atom Smasher is being tested 13 days from today.  You people just make this stuff up as you go along, don't you?  It's all, "Let's see what kind of c**p I can make up on the fly here and sound like I know what I'm talking about."

  16. No.  I predict that 2012 will happen.  Safe prediction.

The History Channel has become increasingly dumb in its strange strories lacking scientific support.

  17. No, I am not scared about 2012... why would I?

Many things have been predicted and failed.

So what´s special about 2012...I´ll be 56, there will be traffic jams, Coca-Cola, McDonald´s, expensive gas ... not many different things, ah?

  18. I think you should sell me everything you own at 10 cents on the dollar, and use the proceeds to eat, drink, and be merry for the next 4 years.

  19. Do not be scared.  I assure you that the world will not end on 2012 December 21 but it will end one day.  Nostradamus’ prediction of when the earth will end is far into the future, past about 3700.  He still has many prophecies that are not fulfilled yet.  Remember that if there is a beginning, there is an end.

The Mayan’s Mesoamerican Long Count calendar forms the basis for a New Age belief, first forecast by Jose Arguelles, that a cataclysm will take place on or about 2012 December 21 (Wikipedia).  It will be the end of a Mayan calendar cycle to start a new cycle.

In the book of Revelation, it tells us about a period of a thousand years of peace. Has this occurred already since the time of Jesus? Not yet. That will still come. Those that give predictions of the world’s end, such as 2012 and numerous times during the past, are pseudo-preachers. Have they talked to God directly? If so, give proofs.

But there is something that is certain—and that is our physical death. This is what we should prepare for. It may come when least expected. We do not know the day and the hour. It will come like a thief in the night. So we just have to be prepared all the time. Search for the true God and when we find Him, follow His commandments and remain in Him until our last dying breath.

This is all that we have to do. It is faith in the true God that we can take with us when we depart from this world. If we denied Him, He will deny us also before the Father in Heaven and send us to h**l. This is very scary – to live in h**l forever.  If we knew Him and loved Him and followed His commandments, then He may reward us to live with Him eternally in His kingdom in Heaven. This is the survival kit that we should have.

What is also certain to happen very soon (in about 2012 or earlier) is World War III and this is a nuclear war.  This calamitous war will start from the Philippines, at Spratly Islands in particular.  The Spratly Islands lie on the South China Sea mostly near the coast of the Philippines.  The Holy Spirit told us that the troubles in the Philippines is like the wick of a lamp.  Once the wick is lit, it will be on and aglow.  He told us about this prophecy more than a decade ago.  Please read what is happening in the Philippines now.  Spratly Islands which is being claimed wholly or partly by six countries including China is in the news and considered a tinderbox, a flash point.  It is very rich in oil and gas resources, more than the reserve of Kuwait.  The high price of oil may trigger the grabbing of these islands and start the war.

Four independent prophecies point to the certainty that this will happen.  These are Nostradamus’ prophecies to happen around this time (quatrains 6:24 and 2:62) , the 56th Chinese prophecy of Tuey Bei Tu (the past 55 prophecies have already been fulfilled), Revelation 9:18 of the Holy Bible, and those that the Holy Spirit revealed to us.  If you are interested in the details about these prophecies, please send me your request via email.

  20. well its good to keep an open mind yes theirs are many things going to happen in 2012 like the mayan calendar, solar radiation getting worse, the atom smasher being tested and if messes up it will destroy every atom, religion believes, etc.First off for the guy who put that the history channel is wrong is stupid because their is nothing wrong about learning theories and just learning basic facts. Its just something that could or could'nt happen so we will find the answer pretty soon anyway.

  21. the mayan calendar just ends then.

had their civilization not been wiped out, they'd have added more cycles.

just because they didn't get a chance to do that, doesn't mean that anything at all unusual will happen.

  22. Well, the Mayan long count calendar ended on exactly dec 21st 2012 but they didn't say what will happened on that day..
