Argentina Polo: AA2000 wins Diamond Cup
With the great performance of legendary Adolfo Cambiaso, AA2000 acquired victory in the final of the 8th Diamond Cup (Copa Diamante) at the La Dolfina Club, Canes, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.
AA2000 after a hard competition overpowered El Remanso (The Gas Cap) and clinched the Diamond Cup, which commenced on November 17th, 2010.
The final game of the Diamond Cup was a commemorating competition of the tournament, which was played between the two legendary foursomes of Argentina.
The AA2000 foursome was comprised of Adolfo Cambiaso (10), Matias Magrini (8), Ernesto Gutierrez (0) and Martin Valent (4) while David Stirling (9), Alejo Taranco (6), Charly Hambury (4) and Cutmore Ollye (3) played from El Remanso.
The Diamond Cup usually plays among the foursomes having 20 to 22 goals handicaps in the rankings. Six teams participated in the 8th edition of Diamond Cup with a total of 129 handicap goals.
Six foursomes which took part in the Diamond were Grand Champion, (20), Yellow Cab (22), AA2000 (22), TMT (22), El Remanso (22) and Punta Del Este Polo Club (21).
El Remanso and AA2000 started the match quite aggressively, but it was AA2000 that topped the scoreboard by the end of the first three chukkers, putting El Remanso under pressure. Adolfo Cambiaso earned a pair of goals on two penalty shots and same from
the field while his teammate Matias Magrini accounted for two goals followed by single goal of Martin Valent.
From the opponent’s side, David Stirling who was used to play with Adolfo Cambiaso for the La Dolfina side scored four goals while his teammate Cutmore Ollye also marked two consecutive goals. El Remanso also earned two goals by handicap in the second chukker
of the match. El Remanso was leading the score, 8-7 after the completion of first half.
A hard combat was observed in start of the second half as one foursome wanted to hold the lead, while the other one wanted to level the score. Back and forth attacks were accomplished from both sides.
El Remanso’s Alejo Taranco and David Stirling scored two goals apiece, while Charly Hambury accounted for one goal in the second half. From the AA2000 side, Adolfo Combiaso and Matias Magrini showed brilliant performance in the second half and levelled the
score at the end of second half. Cambiaso marked four goals in the second half including one goal on penalty shot, while Magrini and Ernesto Gutierrez contributed one goal each.
The score was tied at 13-all at the end of regulation time and the duo foursomes went into extra-chukkers.
Both the teams could not mark a goal in the first extra chukker as many of the shots were missed in that period of time. Adolfo Cambiaso marked the title-winning goal in the second extra-chukker of the match and made the victory possible for his foursome.
It was a golden goal, which Adolfo scored by hitting a shot from 110 yards.
With the golden goal of Adolfo Cambiaso, the AA2000 foursome acquired the title of Diamond Cup (Copa Diamante) and ruined the desires of El Remanso (The Gas Cap) to create history. El Remanso once again failed to achieve the Diamond Cup.
The top scorer of the match was Adolfo Cambiaso with nine goals, while his teammate Matias Magrini marked three goals. Ernesto Gutierrez and Martin Valent contributed one goal apiece for the winning side.
David Stirling scored six goals while his teammates Cutmore Ollye and Alejo Taranco marked two goals apiece in the losing side. Charly Hambury of El Remanso could only score one goal in the match. Adolfo Cambiaso as usual was declared player of the tournament.
