Argentina Vs Mexico Reactions
Diego Maradona’s men once again showed their striking prowess as they outplayed Mexico 3-1 in a repeat of the second round clash between the two teams four years ago in the 2006 football World Cup held in Germany.
Carlos Tevez and Higuain were the two goal scorers as the two time champions shouted a real warning to their quarter-final opponents Germany, who booked their place in the last with a 4-1 thrashing of their own of bitter rivals England.
The Argentine strike force led by Tevez, Higuain and Messi lit up Johannesburg’s Soccer City stadium in a repeat of the 4-1 drubbing of South Korea in a group match in the first week of the tournament.
The South Americans were in the driving seat with a 3-0 lead before young Mexican striker Javier Hernandez underlined his rising stature in world football scoring a consolation goal with 20 minutes remaining in the pre-quarterfinal.
The fans of the team in Blue and White stripes were naturally overjoyed by their team’s clinical dismantling of the Central Americans.
"It was prolific, Argentina continue playing as they always have, from the first match they've been playing the same, they're calm and had control of the ball and they will continue winning and Argentina will be the World Champions," said one beaming fan.
Some of the fans were already preparing for the tie against the three time champions Germany in the quarter-finals stage of the tournament.
The Europeans who last won a World Cup in 1990, beating Argentina in a controversy prone final that left Diego Maradona the then captain of the South Americans inconsolable, swept aside England 4-1 in a game marred by a controversially disallowed English goal in the first half.
Their form is a matter of grave concern for some of the Argentine fans who think that their team would have to come out all guns blazing against them, if they are to topple them and take forward their World Cup dream.
On the other hand Mexican fans licked their wounds, as for the second time running they crashed out of the World Cup at the hands of the South Americans.
One of their fans was disappointed that Argentina's first goal, which should have been declared offside, stood.
"Yes, I am (disappointed) with the referee because the first goal was offside and later we made a mistake but we played with the best that we have in Mexico and we lost, it doesn't matter," he said.
Another fan added that the first two goals from their opponents were purely based on luck and shoddy defending from the Mexicans; he however conceded that at the end the better team won.
Some other fans claimed that they are already looking forward to setting up a date with five time champions and arch rivals Brazil in the final of the tournament, he also declared that his team would be crowned the new champions come what may, "We are waiting for the Brazucas (Brazilians). We want you Brazil," said Marcelo Alejandro an avid fan.
Meanwhile fans in Mexico City were left frustrated by the error strewn performance of their team’s defence line which cost them the World Cup.
Some of the fans who were cheering passionately for their team were almost reduced to tears, saying that their team has once again exited limply and once again it was the South Americans who have proved their nemesis.
Incredibly the exit was Mexico’s fifth consecutive in the second round of the competition, and their passionate fans were left wondering what they need to do to progress beyond the pre-quarter finals stage in the most prestigious football competition of all times.
