Argentina and Brazil win: 2011 FIBA Americas Championship Sep. 5 Review (Part 2)
Argentina 79 – Canada 53
Group-B’s best team Argentina defeated Canada by 79-53 in their first game of the second round of 2011 FIBA Americas Championship on Monday. The host were able to attain this victory with the help of their two key players Luis
Scola and Carlos Delfino.
Scola entertained the Argentinean fans with his 22 points along with six rebounds during his 21 minutes stay on court. While Delfino chipped in with 17 points, two rebounds and one assist for Argentina.
Argentina looked belligerent right from the tip of the game, as they kept driving towards Canada’s post, but solid Canadian defence didn’t allow the Argentinean squad to be effective from inside. However, Canada failed to hold
the Argentineans because of their impatience play and Argentina took full advantage of the situation by outscoring the Canadians with 21-9 burst to secure the first quarter.
With Manu Ginobili became more effective from both sides of the court. Argentina kept Canada under stress and led them by 37-22 before going into the lockers for the halftime.
Canada that looked down and under in the first half of the game put up a better effort in the third quarter. Kelly Olynyk guided the Canadians and put the Argentina on defensive mod with his aggression. This enabled Canada to cut
the deficit to nine when the third period ended with Argentina leading the way with 54-43.
After the little setback in the third, Argentina got themselves together quickly in the final quarter by tightening the things up. A strong defence and a forceful attack resulted with the successful coordination of Scola and Ginobili.
Both put their side ahead of Canada (61-43) within the first three minutes of the fourth period.
Canadian coach rotated its players, but that didn’t affect the play much and Argentina registered the game in their favour by 26 points.
From Canada, Olynyk was the top contributor, but his double-double couldn’t save his side from defeat. Olynyk scored 19 points and clutched 12 rebounds in his double-double contribution.
Brazil 93 – Uruguay 66
The second best team in Group-A Brazil crushed Uruguay by 93-66 in the fourth game of the second round on Monday. It was Vitor Benite, who spearheaded Brazil with his game-high 21 points together with one rebound and one assist.
Team-mates Guilherme Giovannoni and Marcus Souza scored 12 points each for Brazil.
Both teams looked sluggish in the early minutes of the first quarter. Their skirmish continued in order to dominate each other in most of the period, before Brazil burst through with their defences and secured the first frame with
25-16 run.
Uruguay quickly recovered from the first quarter jerk and got themselves together. Uruguay then stiffened their defence and limited the Brazilians. This strategy worked for Uruguay, as they tallied 18 points in comparison to Brazil,
which scored 17 during the period. Still Brazil managed to seize another quarter in their favour by 42-34 lead.
Uruguay had all the chance to cover the shortfall, especially after their second quarter performance. However, Brazil had other plans, as they came out with new strategy and outperformed Uruguay with their 28-12 burst.
Brazil led Uruguay by 70-46 into the fourth quarter, in which the one way traffic continued. Brazil didn’t give Uruguay single sniff to jump back in the game and registered an easy win in their account by 27-point margin.
Sebastian Bernal was the best scorer for Uruguay, tallied 12 points, grabbed four rebounds and provided one assist. While his fellow Sebastian Rodriguez scored 11 points during his 16 minutes of stay on court.
