Argentina bags bronze in XVI Pan American Games - Volleyball news
The bronze medal match of the Men’s Volleyball Tournament at the XVI Pan American Games took place on the Saturday, October 29, between Argentina and Mexico in Guadalajara, Mexico. The five set match was tough but the Argentineans were able to defeat the
home team and secure the third slot in the tournament.
The first set of the match started off well for both teams but as the game progressed, the Argentineans were able to dominate and secure a win. The loss of the opening set triggered the Mexicans into action and propelled by the loud cheers of the home crowd,
Mexico put up a good fight that enabled them to equalise the match by winning the second frame. The second set win got the Mexicans into the flow and they started the third set with confidence which put the pressure on the Argentineans all through. The Mexicans
kept leading all the way with the Argentineans trailing behind until the home team had secured the third set as well. The fourth set started off with both the Mexicans and the Argentineans putting up a good show however, the Argentineans were able to take
the match to a deciding fifth set. The final set of the match was thrilling to watch as both the teams put up their best performance but it was the Argentinean squad that sealed the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 25-18, 22-25, 20-25,
25-22 and 15-13.
The coach of the Argentinean team, Nicholas Bruno, expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference that was conducted after the match reached its close: “We had difficulties but we played at a good level to get back home with a medal. I
am glad.”
The coach of the Mexican team, Jorge Azair, expressed himself in the following way: “I think there are no technical or tactical explanations it was a defeat but at the same time I feel so proud of the way the guys played, and how the people felt identified
with a Mexican volleyball team, it had not happened in a long time.”
On the other hand, the captain of the Mexican team, Ivan Contreras, shared his views in this way: “It is a bittersweet moment, like yesterday, but today it was harder, because we were not at 100 percent, but we faced teams with a great volleyball tradition
like Cuba and Argentina, and I also appreciate the love of the people.”
