Argentina beats India by 3-1 in second round: FIVB Men´s Junior World Championship
The second round of the FIVB Men´s Junior World Championship started in Brazil on August 5, with the first match taking place between Argentina and India. The gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro saw the clash take four sets to reach its close at the end of which
the Argentinean side emerged as victors by 3-1.
The first set saw both teams struggle to maintain dominance but Argentina was successful in bagging an opening set win. However, the Indians put up an impressive struggle in the second set and equalised the match by securing a win. Unfortunately for the
Indians, this was the only set that they could win and ended up losing the third and the fourth ones to the Argentineans by significant margins. The final set scores stood at the following points at the end of the match: 25-21, 23-25, 25-16 and 25-19.
The Argentinean coach, Juan Manuel Cichello made the following comments at the press conference after the match had ended: “We knew that India was a very dangerous team in the offensive side and prepared for that. We used digging, which is our best weapon,
to win the match.”
On the other hand, the Indian coach, M. H. Kumara, gave the following statements: “We lost to Argentina four times in the last Youth and Junior World Championships and I think that messed our player´s minds. We could not stop their numbers 2 and 16. Argentina
is a great team and deserved to win the match.”
The first set of the match saw the Indians take the lead early on at 7-5. However, the Argentineans did not let their rivals get too far and overtook the Indians with a 10-9 lead for themselves. By the time the second technical time out was reached, the
Argentineans were going strong at 16-13. After that point, it was only a matter of time before Argentina bagged the opening set at 25-21.
Building on the momentum generated at winning the previous set, the Argentineans started the second set with a lead but the Indians did not let it last long and took control at 11-10. Argentina kept on the chase and was able to get the advantage at 14-13
only to be over taken by the Indians at 18-17. The game remained tight till the end, when the Indians sealed the deal on the second set as G.R. Vaishnav spiked the ball and made the score board show 25-23.
Argentina started the third set as a rejuvenated team and did not give any room to the Indians to manoeuvre. In a short period of time, the set ended in favour of the Argentineans at 25-16. Likewise, the fourth set was mainly dominated by the Argentineans
with the Indians putting in a half-hearted effort. Argentina won the last set at 25-19.
