Argentina defeats Australia in second of the four-match series
The women’s hockey team of Argentina emerged victorious over Australia in the second consecutive game of the four-match series on Tuesday night at the National Hockey Centre in Canberra, Australia.
It was a great opportunity for Aussies to register an encouraging victory over Argentina, the world number one squad, but they failed to do so.
The women of Argentina proved that why they are standing at number one position in the world ranks. Hockeyroos, which is holding sixth position in the ranking, imposed their game on Argentinean team.
Adam Commens, the chief coach of the women’s hockey team of Australia, while speaking to the media, said that the youngsters performed brilliantly and proved that they could dictate world number one team. He stated, “We did it well, unfortunately we
saw the experience of them against maybe our inexperience in defence, and they were able to capitalise on the opportunities they got.”
Commens made two changes in the squad that faced world champions in the opening competition. Holly Evans and goalie, Toni Cronk, were called back into the team for second match. The two teams received many goal scoring chances in the opening period
but failed do so.
Argentina finally broke out the defence line of Australia in the 26th minute of the game when Daniela Lucia Sruoga marked a goal from top of the circle and established their early dominance in the game. Sruoga, who is contesting
89thgame of her professional career, left no chance for Cronk to deflect the hit.
However, the women of Australia were not ready to give up. Argentina defeated Hockeyroos by two goals, 3-1 in the first contest of the series but they showed stiff resistance in the second match. One minute left into the first half, the host team succeeded
to level the score in the hands of Kellie White. She managed to take the ball inside the circle and marked a flicking hit perfectly into the Argentina goalposts.
In a stunning move, Australians succeeded to obtain a go-ahead goal in the 49thminute and put world champions under heavy pressure. Fiona Boyce played a safe shot to get lead for Hockeyroos in the cliff-hanging contest. However, it was the
last offence from the Aussies and they could not taste the ball in the remaining time.
The players from World Champions started more aggressive game and held the ball mostly under their sticks. In the 61st minute, Maria Noel Barrionuevo converted a penalty-corner and had it all even at two-all.
Soon after the three minutes, Rocia Sanchez Moccia notched another goal and put Argentina ahead in the way to success. An end-to-end play was observed in the remaining time period and Argentina won the second contest and took lead in the series by
2-0.
