Argentina defeats Mexico by 3-2 in Pool A: Pan American Games men’s volleyball tournament
Argentina and Mexico met each other in a Pool A match that was part of the Pan American Games men’s volleyball tournament. The championship is currently taking place in Guadalajara, Mexico and the five set match saw the Argentineans celebrating their hard
earned win by 3-2.
The first set of the match had the teams neck to neck with each other. The match remained close but near the end the Argentineans were able to emerge as the victors of the opening set. The second set of the match progressed the same way as the first one
but and it too ended with an Argentinean win. The Mexican home team propelled themselves forwards in the third set and managed to avoid a clean sweep by bagging the third set. Capitalizing on the momentum built by winning the third set of the game, the Mexicans
were able to bag the fourth set as well. The fifth set was as competitive as expected but the Argentineans were able to pull themselves together in the end and get a match win at the following final set scores: 25-23, 25-23, 25-27, 21-25 and 15-10.
The coach of the Argentinean team, Javier Weber, made the following comments at the press conference that was conducted after the match reached its close: “We had a very tough match. We had a very important advantage on the third set. We didn’t close the
attack as we were trying to. Mexico complicated us a lot and started another match with some modifications; we got in with some players, more relaxed mentally.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Mexican team, Jorge Azair, expressed himself by making the following statements: “Obviously I am angry because of the loss, but at the same time I am very quiet because the guys did a great effort. We could go on the third
and fourth set, with more heart than strategy; we were a little bit confused in the match.”
Even though his team lost the match, the Mexican player, Ivan Contreras, was able to lead all scorers by putting up a total of 29 points for his team. He was helped by Mariano Guistiniano who made his presence felt by adding a total of 13 points for his
team. On the other hand, the Argentinean player Pablo Crer remained most active on his side by putting up a total of 16 points for his team.
The recent win has enabled the Argentineans to grab their first win in the tournament. Despite the fact that the Mexicans lost, they have also been able to tally one win so far.
