Argentina earns a comfortable win over GB in the last match of prelims – Volleyball News
The first round of the 2012 Olympic Men’s Volleyball Tournament concluded on Monday, August 6 in London. The last match of preliminaries in Pool A featured teams from Argentina and the hosts Great Britain.
Visiting Argentinean team sent 3-0 (3-0 (25-18, 25-18, and 25-15) on board to claim a splendid victory in the match. The Earls Court in London provided the backdrop for the match, while more than 13,000 spectators showed up for the support of their favourite
teams. The match decision was out in 1 hour 15 minutes. Argentina finished the opening round of the tournament with an overall record of 3-2. Argentina bagged nine points and settled in third position. Moreover, the men clad in ‘sky blue and white’ outfits
also reserved a spot in the next round of the tournament.
Argentina got a great help from Facundo Conte, who contributed match-high 15 points. On the other hand, home team was supported by Bakare with 14 points.
Argentina caught a good start in the match and picked up an early lead. Convincing attacks by Conte and Pereyra put pressure on the competitor side. British team had a weak defence and gave too many easy points. Oluwadamilola Bakare of home team did well
on attack and added some points. However, the hosts dropped first set by trailing behind with seven points.
In the next two sets, Argentina maintained its dominance on the net and did not allow GB team to come out of the blues. Visiting team continued with success and grabbed 3-0 success in the match.
Javier Weber, the Coach of Argentina, shared his views after the match. He stated: “It was a good match for us. We made point differences right from the start and we were really effective in attack. It was an important win to ensure qualification to the
quarterfinals, so I am very happy.”
Speaking of the upcoming tough challenge, he further added: “Looking ahead to the quarterfinals, I am very positive because the team is getting better and better each match. Whoever we are drawn against it will be a tough team. It could be Russia, Brazil
or Germany. I am looking forward to it. It will be a beautiful battle”.
His British counterpart Harry Brokking commented that his players are very tired after playing five matches in a row. He seemed visibly exhausted and disappointed about the overall results. Team GB failed to break the ice and stayed winless throughout the
competition.
