Argentina is out of danger zone – 2011 FIVB World League
Argentina claimed a straight set win over Serbia on Thursday, June 30 and successfully qualified for the Final Round of the tournament. Argentina was dragged under the clouds of certainty as arch rival Serbia pulled off success in the first match of sixth
week of prelims. Argentina was just three points away from the Final Round qualification, while Serbia needed 5 points. Loss of important match against Serbia created a scare of disqualification for Pool C topper team, Argentina. However, they worked out good
performance in the second match and posted 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, and 25-21) victory over Serbia, in order to bag required three points.
The match was held in Belgrade Serbia, where plenty of local fans had shown up to encourage their team for another winning performance. Argentina had immense pressure from audience and Serbia’s victory in previous match, yet it made the difference and clinched
success. The carefully formulated game plan of head coach Javier Weber led the Argentinean squad to success.
Argentina was better than Serbia since the very beginning of the match. They had prepared themselves for a tough competition as they never wanted to lose the spot in Final Round. They attacked with Facundo Conte, who displayed an incredible game and raised
his team’s score via killing shots and deadly aces. Serbs, on the other hand, played defensively. They were put up with heavy strike of volleys, which didn’t allow them to stay on their feet. They fought well and tied the score at 19-all but Argentina broke
the tie and claimed first set with a margin of two points.
Second set was another tight affair. Serbs threw everything in attack and attacked like hungry wolf. Argentina was aware of the hostile response of hosts after dropping opening set. They defended well against Serbia and remained one step ahead of the rivals.
Serbia’s efforts were commendable but they slipped second set in the same fashion. Argentina claimed better status by just two-point lead at 27-25.
The rhythm and tone was perfectly set for Argentina to finish on the podium. They kept an upper hand on opponents in third set and influenced them with unstoppable shots. The tricky bump-passes of Argentinean setter worked magical points and played a great
role in team’s success. Argentina announced match victory by winning third set, while Serbians left the court with heavy hearts.
Bojan Janic, the captain of Serbian team accepted that Argentinean side put up a better show of volleyball and they deserved victory. He congratulated them for fantastic match. Speaking of his own team, he said we made too many mistakes which totally benefitted
Argentina. Somehow, the Serbian captain still hopes to play in the final round of the tournament. They have to waiting till the final ranking of pool on July 02.
The Captain of Argentina Rodrigo Quiroga also commented about match. He stated, “My compliments to the Serbian team, they played good tonight, but we played with more skills, much better than we did yesterday. We improved our service in reception; our fast
and precise services were the key factor for us winning tonight. We are very happy we won, since this was the best match we played in International round, and I would like to wish good luck to Serbia in coming to the Final 8.”
