Argentina on Day-3 of CSV Continental Women’s Beach Volleyball Cup
The Number 2 team of the 2011 CSV Continental Cup experienced plenty of drama on the third day of the tournament. In the very first match of the day, Argentina was challenged by resilient rivals Venezuela. The Argentinean women staged an eye-catching action
on Colombian sands and defeated their opponents in a marathon match, which featured the longest frame of the tournament so far.
The pairing of Luciana Forguez and Gabriela Albano (Argentina 2) approached the centre court on Guapate beach, Colombia, on Friday and witnessed the Venezuelan counterparts on the other side of the net. Team Venezuela was composed of Orquídea Vera and Frankelina
Rodriguez. The first whistle of the referee started things off and both teams stepped into action. The first set featured balanced action from both sides. However, Argentina got better after the second technical timeout and secured first frame of the match,
21-18.
The loss of opening set pumped up the Venezuelan ladies and they hit back aggressively in the second set. They used different tactics to overcome their opponents and displayed good digging and diving on the court. On the other hand, Argentina was equally
active and did not miss any chance to score points. It resulted in long rallies and created a great vibe in the match. Nothing could be told about the outcome until the final shot in the second set. Both teams regularly traded leadd and remained incredibly
close to each other. The intense fight ended in the tie of game score at 1-1 as Venezuela closed the set 30-28. It was the longest set of the tournament with 58 points from both sides.
Vera/ Rodriguez did exceptionally well in second set but could not stay on the route in third set. Argentinean duo came out firing in 15-point golden set and held off rivals for 2-1 victory by winning third set, 15-11.
The Argentina 2 team (Ana Gallay/ Virginia Zonta) went against the local duo of Andrea Galindo and Claudia Galindo (Colombia 1) in the next match. Comparatively, it was an easy match as the Argentinean players dominated their opponents. Despite the fact
that Colombian team had the competitive edge in the game but Argentineans crushed the Galindo sisters in straight sets. Both frames ended up with identical score of 21-17, giving Argentina the second win of the day.
In the next two matches, Argentina kept operations well under hand and overcame the Uruguayan teams without putting in much effort. Uruguay 1’s Luciana Forguez and Gabriela Albano received 0-2 (17-21, 14-21) defeat from Argentina 1, while Argentina 2 finished
the day off with classy 2-0 (21-17, 21-11) victory over Karina Cardozo and Maria Eugenia Nieto of Uruguay 2.
Argentina totalled 20 points at the end of Day 3 on Friday, December 9 and maintained its 2nd-position on the ranking chart.
