Argentina shows interest for a GP event as Velociudad SpeedCity Circuit gets underway – Formula 1
Argentina has shown interest for a Grand Prix event held in the country and has already started work on developing a new circuit.
The circuit is being developed 80 kilometres outside of Buenos Aires and is being named the Velociudad SpeedCity Circuit. The country held the last Grand Prix event back in 1998.
Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has shown a lot of interest in the growth of the sport in recent years. Korea, India and now the US circuits of Austin and New Jersey street circuit are an example of this. The F1 Supremo has also said that he intends to
schedule more races outside of Europe and only have a maximum of 5 races in Europe in the coming years.
2012 will host a Grand Prix in Austin, and then 2013 will see a Grand Prix held in New Jersey. The US leg of the sport would make it much easier for the South American country to host a Grand Prix event in the near future.
The country has a long history in Formula 1, even though it has not held an event for more than a decade; interest in the sport is still high and that is what the organisers want to tap into. It is not only going to benefit the country it is also going to
be good for the sport to gain popularity in that part of the world.
Just a fortnight ago, Ecclestone suggested that tapping the American market is very important but it is going to take time for the investors to roll in as their business culture wants to have a look at the profit before starting a project which makes it
harder to establish the sport in the region.
That is exactly why Argentina’s interest in holding a Grand Prix event is welcomed with arms wide open. Although the recent scheduling of the Formula 1 season has shown that a maximum of 20 races can be held in a season, which means that other venues would
have to be dropped to hold races at newer venues.
It would be an exciting addition to F1 if Argentina gets the nod for a Grand Prix event in the near future.
