Argentina sweeps past Egypt in a 2011 FIVB Men’s World Cup match - Volleyball
The Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium saw the second day of the fourth round of the 2011 FIVB Men’s World Cup take place on December 3rd. One of the matches that were staged at the venue took place between Argentina and Egypt. After losing five consecutive
matches, the Argentinean team was able to break the spell by grabbing themselves a win over the Egyptians by a clean sweep.
The championship is currently being held in Japan, which already has had hosted the 2011 FIVB Women’s World Cup.
The first set of the match saw both the teams play neck to neck with each other. No team was able to hold the lead for a long period of time. However, as the frame reached its final stages, the Argentineans were able to push themselves forwards and earn
a win. The loss of the first set of the game enabled the Egyptians to come out strong in the second set. The energetic Egyptian squad provided quite a challenge to the Argentineans but the effort was not enough to earn a win.
The loss of the first two sets of the game caused a decrease in the morale of the Egyptians that also affected their performance in the third set. Therefore, it was not a tough job for the confident Argentinean side to get hold of the third set and seal
the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 25-20, 25-21 and 25-17.
The coach of the winning team, Javier Weber, shared his views about the match in the following words: “I am very happy today because we played well for the entire match. We lost the last five matches, but today we won. But most importantly we played well,
inside-out, organized on blocking and defense, touching many balls on defense. This is our game.”
On the other hand, the Egyptian squad’s coach, Sherif El-Shermerly, expressed his feelings by giving these statements: “First I’d like to say congratulations to coach Weber. The Argentinean team played well. They reduced their mistakes, while we continued
to make mistakes. I hope tomorrow and when we go back to Cairo we can try to solve our problems.”
The player that was able to score the most points among both the sides belonged to Argentina. Federico Pereyra was able to become the top scorer of the match after tallying a total of 15 points for Argentina. Pereyra was helped by his teammate Facundo Conte
who made his presence felt by adding 14 points to his side of the score board. On the Egyptian squad, the most active player was Abdel Latif Ahmed who kept the pressure on the Argentineans by putting up nine points of his own.
