Argentina thump Venezuela; Brazil rout Panama: FIBA Americas C’ Ship September 6 Review (Part 3)
Argentina 111 – Venezuela 93
Argentina’s great run in the 2011 FIBA Americas continued on Tuesday as they overcame Venezuela 111-93 win and qualified for the semi-finals round. It was Argentina’s sixth back to back victory.
San Antonio Spurs star Manu Ginobili once again proved to his worth on the night. Ginobili thumped a game-high 26 points along with two rebounds, three assists and three steals. It took him 26 minutes, six three-pointers and four
two-pointers to tally these numbers.
Argentina tipped off forcefully, as Andres Marcelo Nocioni put the first points on board with a three-pointer. Seeing his team struggling, Venezuela coach Eric Musselman was forced to take a timeout. The break worked for Venezuela,
as they lifted their play and closed in on Argentina. However, Carlos Delfino and Luis Scola made the possessions in the later minutes of the period and left the scoreboard 30-20 at the close of first quarter.
Venezuela put up a better effort in the second quarter and by the time, the halftime buzzer sounded, Venezuela was just eight behind (51-43).
Although, Greivis Vasquez lost his groove in the third quarter, but still team Venezuela continued to push and stayed within striking range. The hosts led Venezuela once gain by 79-72, when the quarter finished.
Argentina shored up their defence in the final quarter and succeeded in restricting the opposition. The end result was an 18 point romp for the hosts.
From Venezuela, Hector Romero was the top scorer. He made 21 points and grasped four rebounds for Venezuela. Romero went seven of 11 from the field and seven of seven from the charity stripe.
Brazil 90 – Panama 65
Brazil routed Panama 90-65 on the second day of the second round in 2011 FIBA Americas Championship. Brazil dominated Panama for most part of the game and gained their second consecutive victory in the round.
Guilherme Giovannoni led all Brazilian scorers with 17 points. He also made one steal, clutched two rebounds and provided three assists in only 18 minutes. Guilherme hit 100 percent from field and three-point area and finished
at 75 percent from the free throw line.
Caio Aparecido Silveira Torres supported him well. He made 11 points and grabbed six rebounds from Brazilian side. In addition to that, he also dished out two assists and shot 100 percent both from the field and three-point range.
Brazil carried the momentum from their previous victory and took the charge straight away. The Brazilians outscored Panama 20-13 during the first period.
The one way traffic continued in the second quarter as well, as the Brazilians kept on making inroads into the fragile defence of the Panama. At the halftime break, Brazil was leading the way comprehensively with 44-28.
Things didn’t change much after the break, as the Brazilian offense started from where they had left at halftime. Brazil extended their lead to 24 points (70-46) at the close of third period. They were never threatened after that.
Danilo Pinnock led all scorers on the night with 20 points. Pinnock also had four rebounds, two steals and one assist during his 37 minutes stay on the court. Although his shooting from the field remained below par, but he hit
67 percent from beyond the arc and 100 percent from the paint. Jose Ferron also scored 16 points and clutched four rebounds for Panama.
