Argentina tops Pool B after defeating Spain 3-1 in FIVB Volleyball Men’s Junior World Championship
Wednesday, August 3rd at the Caio Martins Gymnasium saw the Argentinean team compete against the Spanish side in a fixture of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Junior World Championship. The match between both teams lasted four grueling sets at the end
of which Argentina emerged as the victor by 3-1.
The first set of the match was fairly one sided with the Argentinean team being in the lead most of the time. However, Spain rebounded in the second set of the game and equalised the match by bagging the set. The Argentinean side did not give much of a chance
to the Spanish squad in the third set and won it by a comfortable margin. Playing with a two set deficit got the morale of the Spanish side down and they could not put up an impressive performance in the fourth set. As a result, Argentina won the match at
the following final set scores: 25-20, 22-25, 25-14 and 25-8.
The Argentinean coach, Juan Manuel Cichelle, made the following comments at the press conference after the match had reached its close: “We knew Spain was a great team. They didn't make mistakes in their previous two matches. We had some mistakes, but we
are going to the second turn with great expectations."
On the other hand, the Spanish coach, Francisco Hervás, stated that: “This was one of those matches where the kids are trying to find their spirit and the just can't. They were trying their best. We were lost. We couldn't find any rhythm and Argentina didn't
give us any space for mistakes. We will try to recover as quickly as we can for the next round.”
The start of the first set of the game saw both the teams come out strong. As the first technical time out was reached, Spain had the advantage at 8-7. However, the Argentinean team did not give up the chase and were able to take the lead at 11-9 and extend
it till 21-18. As the final stages of the game were reached, Argentina did not loosen its grip and took the match to an end on their terms at 25-20.
Like in the first set of the game, the Spanish side was able to take the lead early on at 8-7 in the second set. Spain did not let go of the advantage till 10-7 and Argentina kept trailing behind at 19-16. However, Argentina was able to restrict Spain and
reach a tie at 19-19. However, it was the Spanish side that got hold of the second set at 25-22.
The third set was tied at 8-8 but as the match progressed, Argentina took the lead at 15-8 and eventually bagged the set at 25-14. The fourth set of the game was a one sided affair as Argentina did not take much time in sealing the deal at 25-8.
The recent win has Argentina leading Pool B whereas the Spanish squad has gotten itself in second position and both teams have qualified to take part in the second round of the championships.
