Argentina win first test match against South Africa
Argentina, the World Champions of Women’s hockey, which is currently touring in South Africa, has clinched a victory against the host country with a magnificent performance from Noelle Barrionuevo and Silvina D'Elia.
The women hockey team of Argentina overpowered South Africa in the first test match of the five-match series at the University of Free State Hockey Centre in Bloemfontein, South Africa. World Champions, Argentina won the game 2-0
and took lead 1-0 in the five-match test series.
The legendary strikers of Argentina’s women hockey squad took the lead in the first half of the match, when Captain Noelle Barrionuevo successfully converted a penalty corner and put South Africa under severe pressure.
By leading one goal in the match, Argentina started an aggressive game and carried out many attacks against the opposite team. The result of the match was made definite when Silvina D’Elia of Argentina scored another goal on a
short corner and upped the lead by two goals, 2-0. The goalkeeper of South Africa, Mariette Rix failed to stop the dribbling hit of Argentina’s girl.
The two teams started an aggressive game in the second half as South Africa wanted to equalise the score while Argentina, player to hold the lead. South Africa got many chances to score but failed to do so. Veteran South African
striker, Pietie Coetzee missed a penalty corner by hitting the ball against the crossbar.
Captain of South Africa, Marsha Marescia along with Lesle-Ann George carried out numerous attacks but all went in vain before the defence of Argentina.
Rhe defensive structure of home country South Africa was tested by the moves and strikes of legendary teenage attacker, Jimena Cedres.
The girls of Argentina under the supervision of coach, Carlos Retegui, displayed a very mature and disciplined game while the opponents under the coaching of Giles Bonnet’s could not perform as expected.
The 2nd test match of the five-match series between South Africa and Argentina will be played on Monday while the 3rd, 4th and 5th will be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday respectively.
