Argentina wins CSV Qualification Tournament final and claims Olympic ticket – Volleyball news
Men’s national volleyball team of Argentina pulled off success in the influential final match of 2012 CSV Olympic Qualification and clawed its way to the Olympic Games.
Team Argentine played under the tag of hosts as Argentinean city Almirante Brown provided the backdrop for the Olympic Qualifiers. Equipped with stupendous support of local fans, home team defeated Venezuela in the final showdown of the tournament this past
Sunday. The match decision was out in just three sets and final game score was 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 27-25).
More than 2,500 fans showed up at the Polideportivo Municipal sport hall in Almirante Brown, Argentina. Facundo Conte of Argentina remained the centre of attention throughout the match. He grabbed whole lot of attention with his amazing tactics. He supported
his team with match-high 14 points. On the other hand, Luis Arias of Venezuela totalled team-high 12 points. His teammate Luis Diaz was the third player in the match, who went in to double-figure score.
Overall, Argentina bagged 38 points whereas Venezuela ended with 32. On the defence side, the hosts added 9 blocks in response to Venezuela’s 4 blocks. Visiting team failed to score any aces in the match, while Argentina notched up three on 64 attempts.
The match was opened on an even note and both teams regularly scored points. Argentina managed to make a little difference at first technical timeout with one-point lead 8-7. Venezuela resisted and did not give an easy time to local team. Nonetheless, the
Argentinean squad remained steady and stretched the gap of points at next break. They moved to 16-13 and did not allow Venezuela to come up. As a result, first set ended in Argentina’s favour at 25-19.
In the second set, Argentina jumped to 8-4 lead at the first technical timeout. Quiroga and Conte put up a combined effort and added a flurry of points. Argentina finished the second set with identical score of 25-19 and improved to 2-0 in the game.
Third set turned into a heated competition as Venezuela attacked with power and tested the nerves of hosts. However, Argentina clinched success with a narrow margin of two points (27-25).
Mentor Argentinean team, Javier Weber, expressed much delight about victory in the final showdown of the tournament. He shared his thoughts after the match, where he stated, “It was a dream and a very hard challenge. We controlled our nerves and we managed
our limitations. We worked for four years and all it takes is three days for a team to go to the Olympic Games or stay at home.”
Furthermore, the winning skipper Rodrigo Quiroga commented, “London is the dream of any athlete and I wanted to be at the Olympic Games ever since we missed out in 2008.”
