Argentina with an unbeatable record in the Canberra Series – Hockey Update
World’s best Women’s hockey team of Argentina beat Australia-A 3-1 on the fourth day of the Canberra series at National Hockey Centre in Lyneham.
In total, it was the third match played by Argentina in the series but was the second face-off between the two teams.
Australia-A team was defeated by the World Champions in both the encounters, despite struggling hard to improve their competency.
In comparison to their last defeat, they displayed their capabilities to the utmost by opening a score against the top Women’s hockey team. Moreover, the defensive wing of the team was tremendous, holding Las Leonas from scoring too many goals. The attack
wing hardly scored a goal, showing a little improvement in their game.
The less-experienced host team shoved-off a great defensive display right from the first minute of the match. However, Maria Silvina D’elia from Argentina opened the score with a 24th minute goal, setting the score 1-0.
The first half ended with a one-goal lead for Las Leonas at 1-0. This displayed the fact that the Australian defence was too strong for the world class hockey players to break in.
The most distinguishable of all was the host team’s goal-keeper Ashley Wells, letting down many of the opponent’s efforts to score. The lead could have gone far, if Wells did not fearlessly confront Argentina.
In the second half, Las Leonas became more furious in the field, securing two goals within a two-minute gap in the penalty corner.
The first goal took place in the 40th minute penalty corner that was well-executed by Rosario Luchetti followed by Gisella Kaneusky’s
penalty corner goal that took place in the 42nd minute of the match. The Argentinean lead went up 3-0.
In the 52nd minute, Australia-A fought back and opened their first goal that was shot by Jade Warrender. The trailing team stepped up with one score in hand, reducing the trail to 1-3.
The game picked up speed in the last fifteen minutes, with head-to-head battle going on in the field. Disappointingly, Australian efforts went to waste with no addition to the scoreboard until the time-out was called. The match closed 3-1 and Argentina sealed
their victory over the Australian team twice in the series.
The losing team had played very well in the last twenty minutes, raising hopes to reducing the Argentinean lead. However, Las Leonas kept their record of being unbeatable throughout the Canberra series with three consecutive wins.
In the last test match to be played in Canberra, Argentina will compete against the Hockeyroos for the second time at the same venue on April 5. It will be interesting to see if Las Leonas remain unbeaten in the Canberra series.
