Argentina’s Alejo Rigoni clinches 2011 J/24 World Championship at Yacht Club Argentino, Buenos Aires
A convincing performance throughout the 2011 J/24 World Championships brought Argentina’s Alejo Rigoni, on top of the fleet standings. The Argentinean made it to the first podium spot with 50 points after sailing in nine races, which included a discard race,
at Yacht Club Argentino, in Buenos Aires.
The Race Committee had to abandon the final day’s racing for a while in the start of the day, because there was not enough breeze to commence any sail. Finally, enough wind filled in from 10 to 12 knots for sailors to launch their boats into Buenos Aires
waters and sail in the ninth race of J24 Worlds.
The only race of the final day started under the black flag and saw America’s Mike Ingham taking an early lead to the first mark. However, he could not maintain his lead until the end and finished the race on third place to hit third position overall in
the standings.
Argentina’s Francisco van Avermaete grabbed the ninth race victory but was not able to make it into the top three podiums. He finished fourth overall with 71 points. Luis Olcese of Peru did not perform up to the mark but thanks to the discarded race, he
managed to win second podium spot with 63 points.
