Argentine Andres Romero leads Reno Tahoe Open
At the start of the tournament, Andres Romero did not know how the scoring of the tournament would be but after the first round, he found himself leading the event with one point.
Behind the Argentinean, is the 21-year-old rookie from South Korea, Seung-Yul Noh. The Korean did not expect that he would be playing at Reno Tahoe Open but he is just one point behind Romero.
The tournament uses a modified form of Stableford scoring system, a system that encourages aggressive play. According to this system, players receive eight points for a double eagle, five for an eagle, two for a birdie, zero for a par, minus-one for a bogey
and minus-three for a double bogey or worse.
Romero birdied four of his first six holes and he shot a flawless round. Romero’s only victory on the PGA Tour came in 2008, when he won the Zurich Classic, however he has eight international victories.
"I had a good feeling on the greens and that's why I got the score," said Romero
This is the first time that Romero is playing in an event which uses the Stableford system. After 2006, it is the first time that this system is used on the PGA Tour.
"It's unusual to see scores on the board like (plus) 14 or 12 or whatever," Romero said, "I usually have a lot birdies and bogeys as well. I'm usually very aggressive."
Overall the Argentinean scored seven birdies and in a stroke play format, his score would be 7-under 65.
The course also encourages aggressive play so probably such sort of scoring suits the tournament. All the par five holes can be covered in two shots. This encourages the players to go big right from the tee off.
At the end of round one, Romero sat comfortably with fourteen points, with South Korea’s Seung-Yul Noh trailing him by one point. Three Americans were tied at eleven points, with John Daly four points behind the leader after shooting six birdies and two
bogeys.
Romero uses an interpreter as he does not know English. He was happy about the fact that he is leading and he hoped to continue with such a performance throughout the tournament.
