Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro beats Serb Janko Tipsarevic to clinch Men's singles title at Delray
Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina thrashed Serb Janko Tipsarevic in the championship final of the 2011 Delray Beach International Tennis Championships to clinch the Men's singles title on Sunday. Del Potro instantly exercised his authority on the game, initiating
the first set with a 6-4 win and furthermore, taking the second set 6-4 to bring a close to the match.
“Janko had the control in the first set, but I was focused on my serve because it was only a break. I served very bad at 5-4, he had the opportunity to break my serve, but I improved a little bit my game, my forehand started to work; that helped me to close
the set,” stated the Argentine.
Del Potro had been out for most of the 2010 tennis season after having injured his wrist at the U.S. Open in 2009, defeating Roger Federer to take the title. Nevertheless, Juan's win at Delray proved that the professional has yet to have lost his spark.
Tipsarevic, who was out to get the first title this season stated, "It just didn’t go my way today. I think the tactic I had was too aggressive, probably because I was afraid that maybe if I start letting him play that we would dominate the court. The game
plan I had was good. I just didn’t play good today.”
Del Potro put in a magnificent performance as he beat the Serb. It was the perfect match to have in the final, as both players fought hard for the victory. Del Potro will undoubtedly be excited for his win, as the player is proving his worth amongst some of
the top players of the game.
Juan will be taking time off in South Florida, before he decides whether or whether not to play the Association of Tennis Professionals World Tour Masters 1000 in Indian Wells, California. The tournament will be starting off on the 10th of March. It will
be interesting to see how Del Potro carries his winning momentum forward into the rest of the tennis season. His competitive victory definitely gave all the fans something to cheer about.
