Question:

Arghhhh horse job problem?!?

When I was 11 I worked at an equestrian park to pay for horse lessons. I worked there for 2 years but I decided to quit coz I was going to high school and I thought it would be a bit stressful. Now I'm 15 and I want to get back into horse riding. Problem is I've never had a horse, and the chances of me getting one soon is very small. I told my mum I wanted to get lessons again but she won't let me. I'm really annoyed at myself that I gave it up.

I've recently realised that horses are not just a phase for me. I want a career involving horses but I have no idea what.

Can you please give me advice on how I can convince my mum to let me ride again?

And also can you mention some careers involving horses?

Thankyou xo

  1. tell your mum that you love horses alot and that you wanna have a career with horses and the only way you are going to learn is if you ride.tell her that the only job you ever want to have is to do with horses and if you dont ride then you cant get a job at all.

there are heaps of careers with horses. the riding ones are: show jumping, cross country, dressage, eventing and please dont get into horse racing and i dont care what the other people think but racing is a VERY cruel sport!!!if you want more info about that go to www.horseracingkills.org

anyways back to the subject, other careers paths are horse dentistry, farrier, riding instructor, or you could work at a riding stable being a stable hand or something.

anyways wishing you the best of luck and i hope your mum lets you ride!!! :)

  2. I did the same thing. Only, since my mom wouldn't let me have lessons again, I kind of listened to her and stopped riding for about 4 years until I said to myself "EFF THIS! I need to ride!" haha

You are 15 now? How long until you get your license? Once you have your license, you will be able to take yourself to lessons, or to the barn to work for lessons.

A few colleges (such as Lake Erie College) offer equine programs such as equine facility management, stud farm management, teacher/trainer, among other things. You could consider going to a school which offers equine studies-the difference between "doing it on your own" and going to a college for it is that the college will supply you with tons of connections to farms and owners who will look to you for work, so you can always consider that.

  3. I been riding since i was about 3. And i know for a fact that horses will always be apart of my life."life without horses, i don't think so!" I respect you for giving up something you really loved for school.

What i would do is call or talk to the people that you once worked for, for lessons. See if they wanted to do that again. Offer more of your time. OR look in the local papers and see if you can find a job involving horses (groom, stall hand, vet help, exerciser, mucker, (or if good at,) horse trainer)

Move forward on your own. Tell your mom what you want to do. And when the right horse comes, you will be ready. My mom helped me alot!!! Keep her on your good side!!!! You will come across plenty of horses!! try them all out. look at them. This will help you get experience. You will learn.(PS NEVER BUY A HORSE WITHOUT A VET CHECK!!!!)

    Remember just wait for it. Everything will fall into place if you really want it. for more advice, check out my website, and read what i had to go through. { foal2horse.com }

    hopefully,

  4. What i would do is sit my mom down and tell her not to talk till i was done. then i would explain that horses are not just a phase and are a part of your life. I would say that you would get a job to pay for the lessons yourself so your mom wouldn't have to.

Some careers i know of that involve horses are:

    jumping horses

    racing

    equine vet

    or a farrier

  5. Try sitting down with your mum and letting her know your really interested in horses and arent going to have a few lessons and stop again. Your mum is probably more reluctant now because of what happened last time.

Try letting her know how you feel and if needed or for pure fun a bit of a guilt trip her way wouldnt hurt.

Some jobs working with horses are:

    -trainer

    -jockey

    -show jumper

    -3 day eventer

    -stable hand

    -riding teacher

    -vet

    -etc.

    GOOD LUCK!!

  6. There really are not a great many oppurtunities to have a career with horses.  Equine vets are out there but the catch is that vet school is VERY hard.  In fact I know someone that flunked vet school, went into med school, and did very well with much less studying.  In vet school you have to know every thing for every animal.  In med school you stick with humans.

As far and trainers and riders.  Those jobs are few and far between, expecially campared with the number of people who want them.

A farrier is a good possibility as is a saddle maker or repairer.

Another possibility is to open a tack shop.

  7. Volunteer as much as possible.  I've stuck along with the same riding school for 7 years.  I haven't paid anything for the last four years.  You'd be surprised at what people will let you try when you follow them around and pick up their horses' p**p for a while, or pick hooves, or walk little kids around on leadlines.  I did that for a while, then a trainer came who taught me how to work one-on-one with kids as an instructor.  Now she'll hand a horse to me and tell me to teach him  how to lunge so she can use him for lunging lessons.  I'm there quite a bit, three days a week, five hours or more at a time, working and not getting paid, but learning a lot and getting to ride all sorts of different animals.

  8. sit mum down and make a deal where you will do more house work or give up a allowance to be aloud to ride.  you can do racing certificate's or animals management. do work on local studs of the breeds you like so if a job dose come up you might get ask first. i am a breeder of Arabs and i had to work for nothing for many years before i got to where i am now.
