Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace wins Women’s 50m freestyle heats - Canadian Olympic & Paralympic Trials
Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace of BAH won the preliminary rounds of Women’s 50m freestyle on sixth day of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials in Montreal on Sunday, April 1.
The 22-year-old Vanderpool-Wallace spoiled the party of her competitors as she picked up the fastest qualification spot in the playoff. Her phenomenal effort remained almost one stroke ahead of her closest competitor, Victoria Poon of PPO, who followed her on the finishing end as second best swimmer.
Vanderpool-Wallace remained prominent for first spot of the event from the start and with her alluring efforts, she ended her swim in a time of 25.36 seconds. Her effort was trailed by Poon, who stayed 0.10 seconds slower from her and transpired on the finishing end with the timing of 25.46 seconds.
The third position of the discipline was secured by Chantal Vanlandeghem of MANTA, who stayed 0.06 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and tapped the wall with an effort of 25.52 seconds.
The 18-year-old Vanlandeghem was chased by Hannah Riordan of PPO, who stayed 0.13 seconds slower from her former finisher and clocked an effort of 25.65 seconds for fourth position. She was followed by Jennifer Beckberger of WD, who was just 0.05 seconds slower from her former finisher and ended her sprint with the timing of 25.70 seconds for fifth position.
In the meantime, the crowd witnessed a furious battle between Sandrine Mainville of PPO and Michelle Williams of NYAC, who engaged each other in a neck-to-neck race for sixth best spot of the swim.
The 20-year-old Mainville managed to outperform her rival on the finishing end and she earned her way into the final round as sixth position holder by hitting the wall with an effort of 26.02 seconds. Williams remained 0.05 seconds slower from her and posted a time of 26.07 seconds for seventh position.
The eighth best spot of the event was obtained by Seanna Mitchell of UCSC, who posted an effort of 26.10 seconds to enter the playoff.
Furthermore, these finalists will compete with each other in the playoff, where top two finishers will confirm their place to 2012 London Olympic Games.
