Aristeidis Grigoriadis clinches Men’s 100m backstroke gold: Day two – European LC Championships
Aristeidis Grigoriadis of Greece clinched gold medal of the Men’s 100m backstroke on day two of the European Long Course Championships in Debrecen, Hungary on Tuesday, May 22.
Grigoriadis, who qualified into the playoff as second fastest swimmer, elevated his efforts in the final round and overpowered his strongest contender for gold medal of the discipline.
He faced tough competition from Helge Meeuw of Germany in the double lap discipline and cruised his way towards the finishing end for gold medal with the timing of 53.86 seconds.
He was followed by Meeuw, who stayed 0.20 seconds apart and reached the finishing end for silver medal by submitting a time of 54.06.
The silver medallist was followed by Yakov Yan Toumarkin of Israel, who remained 0.08 seconds apart and submitted a time of 54.14 seconds for bronze medal of the event.
The bronze medallist was followed by Peter Bernek of Hungary, who remained half body length behind and settled on the finishing blockade as fourth finest swimmer with the timing of 54.77 seconds.
Fifth position of the discipline was obtained by Vitaly Borisov of Russia, who stayed just 0.01 seconds apart and clocked a time of 54.78 seconds.
Next was the Men’s 100m breaststroke playoff, where Fabio Scozzoli of Italy served notice of his talent by winning gold medal of the discipline.
His stupendous pace place him one stroke ahead of his closest swimmer and he occupied gold medal of the discipline by reporting a time of 1 minute and 00.55 seconds.
The champion was followed by Valeriy Dymo of Ukraine, who was just an inch slower from overwhelming the gold medallist and reached the podium for silver medal by posting a time of 1 minute and 00.68 seconds.
Third position of the discipline was secured by Mattia Pesce of Italy, who finished his swim with an effort of 1 minute and 00.93 seconds. Pesce was chased by Marco Koch of Germany, who obtained fourth position with the timing of 1 minute and 00.99 seconds.
In addition, the position holder received awards and accolades for their gruelling efforts after the session.
