Arizona Cardinals Kevin Kolb looks forward to competing for starting role – NFL News
The entire offseason passed as we kept on guessing who will be Arizona Cardinals starting quarterback in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season.
The team officials did not spill the beans but the time is finally here when we will know the answer to this question. As the Cards head to their training camp, it is expected that the starter will be announced pretty soon.
Kevin Kolb, who started for them last season but was forced out due to injury and allowed John Skelton to take the role, does not seem threatened by the competition.
The Cards have made it clear that they will monitor performance of Kolb and Skelton before naming the starter, and Kolb is ready to prove his mettle.
Kolb started his professional NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2007 and had to compete for the starting job there as well. So, it is not something new for him and he looks forward to having a tough competition.
He told NFL Network's Rebecca Haarlow at Cardinals camp:
“Well it's funny because they said the same thing last year, so that's the way (Ken Whisenhunt) works and this coaching staff works. It's nothing new for myself, throughout my entire career I've done that from the word 'go,' even when I went to Philadelphia
with Michael (Vick) and Donovan (McNabb).”
Kolb added:
"It's something I'm used to. It's always a grind, it's always tough to come and compete every single day, but I look forward to doing it."
Earlier, Skelton had also said that he would give his best shot to earn the starting role.
Last season, Kolb could only play nine games while Skelton played eight and started seven of them. Nobody was able to really give a standout performance and this forced the management to test them before naming the starter for the 2012 season.
The Cards finished the last season 8-8 and the road is going to be tougher this time as the National Football Conference (NFC) West is expected to be dominated by the San Francisco 49ers. Seattle Seahawks might also surprise many.
The starting quarterback will have to give his best shot right from the first game if the Cardinals want to reach the playoffs this time.
