Arizona Cardinals aims to extend linebacker Daryl Washington’s contract – NFL News
Arizona Cardinals have hinted what their fans have been waiting to hear for quite some time. There are indications that inside linebacker Daryl Washington is next in line to receive a contract extension.
During a practice session at Cardinals training camp, general manager Rod Graves spoke to media on Monday, July 31, 2012. Talking about Washington he said:
"He's a very talented player and he has demonstrated that he's the type of guy that we want in our program for the long term. We're hoping we can get to a point where we can sit down and talk about extending our relationship with him. He certainly is one
that we're focused on doing that with."
Washington looked phenomenal last season. He got 107 tackles along with two interceptions and five sacks. He is considered an integral part of the defensive team that looks to keep improving every season.
Cardinals’ defence was ranked 18th last season, but they had the best third down defence in the league. This is an encouraging sign for the overall defence.
Washington himself has recently shown interest in getting a long-term deal with the Cardinals. He had said:
"I certainly want to be here for a long time. This is where I want to end my career, hopefully. No offer yet, but hopefully we'll get something done sooner or later. I just want to try to get better and progress every year.”
Washington will start his third season in the league this year. He was drafted by Cardinals in the second round (47th overall pick) of the 2010 draft.
Washington had an outstanding rookie season followed by a breakout season last year. The 6-foot-2, 230 pounds Washington has the agility and flexibility to play at various positions. His speed allows him to be used in many ways.
Cardinal’s defensive coordinator Ray Horton has the reputation of creating confusions in the opponent’s mind. A player like Washington will certainly help him achieve that goal.
Washington himself is ready to play at whatever position the team wants. He has said that he is ready to play even in the special team as a punt returner.
