Arizona Cardinals assert need of drafting good players – NFL News
The National Football League (NFL) draft will take place on Thursday, April 26, 2012, and end on Saturday, April 28, but all franchises have been preparing for this event soon after the end of last NFL season, some even started preparing when the season
was in progress.
As they finalise their preparations for the draft, the Arizona Cardinals have stressed on the need of hiring good college players through the draft and the franchise is planning on retaining the young talent for a long period of time.
After the end of the last NFL season, Cardinals had an option to sign new players off the free agency, but the philosophy followed in Arizona calls for hiring college players and relying more on their talent rather than setting hopes for players signed through
free agency.
The Cards won eight games and lost eight in the last regular season and could not qualify for the playoffs from the National Football Conference (NFC) West division.
Following the failure, the Cards are hoping to develop their squad into a powerful unit, which could pose significant threats to their opponents in the next season. And to achieve that goal, the Cards think that hiring players through draft is the best option.
Cardinals’ general manager, Rod Graves, thinks:
“To me the draft is the best way to operate from a management standpoint. If you are drafting well, it allow you to do a lot of things you wouldn’t otherwise be able to do.”
Graves also thinks that it is easier to develop chemistry with young players. He said:
“When you have a chance to bring young players in and start them from the ground up, you have a much better opportunity for that process to be smooth.”
Cardinals’ director of player personnel, Steve Keim, also shares the same sentiments. He thinks that the players available in the free agency cannot completely meet the needs of any team.
Furthermore, the new players are selected by the teams on relatively less expensive deals, making it easier for the management to address other issues while staying within the cap level.
Keim said:
“There is quality at certain positions you just don’t see in free agency. And the few that do get to free agency, they break the bank. If you don’t draft well at least in some core positions, it will bite you in the end.”
