Arizona Cardinals give five-year deal to Calais Campbell – NFL News
When the Arizona Cardinals had assigned their franchise tag on defensive end, Calais Campbell, a couple of months ago, they made it clear that the move was aimed at keeping the player with the team for a longer period of time and that they would work out
a long-term deal for the player.
It only took around two months for the Cards to come up with an offer the player just could not refuse.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Campbell received a new five-year deal from the franchise on Thursday, May 10, 2012.
Campbell and the team management have not yet provided details of the new deal, but both sides are said to be pleased over the development.
Campbell started his professional National Football League (NFL) career with the Cards in 2008. His four-year rookie contract ended after the last season, but the team wanted to keep the player for a long period of time.
So Cardinals assigned their franchise tag on the player and their general manager, Rod Graves, made it clear that a new deal would be presented to the player soon.
While announcing the tender, the GM commented:
“To be clear, reaching a long-term deal that will keep Calais with the Cardinals for years to come remains our primary objective. This move today allows us the opportunity to continue working with Calais and his agent toward that goal and that's exactly
what we will do."
In his rookie season, Campbell played all 16 games in the regular season, but could not get the starting role.
However, he has been playing as the starter since his second season.
In 2009, he played 16 games and started 15 of them. In total, he recorded 48 tackles and 7.0 sacks that season.
In 2010, he played and started 15 games in which he made a total of 60 tackles and 6.0 sacks.
Last year, he registered his career-best performance and while playing in 16 games as starter, he posted a total of 72 tackles and 8.0 sacks.
There was no way the Cards would have let this talent player slip out of their hands and the early re-signing indicates how crucial the player is for the team.
