Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt: Kevin Kolb handled decision well – NFL News
Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt has said that quarterback Kevin Kolb has handled the team’s decision to prefer John Skelton over him for the starting role in the upcoming season quite nicely.
The Cards named their starter on Friday, August 31, and Kolb, who was their main starter last year, apparently could not perform better than Skelton during the evaluation phase that had been running since the last few months.
Kolb has more experience than Skelton, but his injury issues have always bothered him. Now that Kolb has to play at backup position, he is certainly disappointed for not winning the role, but the head coach has appreciated his professionalism.
Whisenhunt told NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano on Friday's "NFL Total Access”:
“He took it like a pro. He was disappointed as you would expect for him to be. He's a competitive player, but he also know that he has to be ready. And in today's NFL, the chances of your quarterback making it through the entire season are not that great.
So, understandably, as anyone would be, he was disappointed, but he handled himself well."
Meanwhile, the head coach has not entirely ruled Kolb out. Although he has announced that Skelton will start for them, Whisenhunt has made it clear that if Skelton is unable to perform well he might lose the starting job. Moreover, Kolb could also be considered
for the starting role if Skelton faces any untoward situation in form of injury during the regular season.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Whisenhunt said while announcing the starter:
“There’s no guarantee going forward Kevin won’t be playing for us, or won’t be the starter at some point. We’re talking about right now.”
The coach made it clear:
“If you’re not getting the job done, you’re going to be replaced.”
Kolb joined the Cardinals last year after spending four seasons at the Philadelphia Eagles where he was not their regular starter. He got the opportunity to become a regular starter with the Cards last year, but it seems that he has lost that opportunity
now. However, he must not feel dejected and prepare himself for any other opportunity as it is the best thing for him to do at the moment.
