Arizona Cardinals’ head coach Ken Whisenhunt: Rookies will learn quickly from veterans – NFL News
Arizona Cardinals’ head coach, Ken Whisenhunt, has said that he would not put a lot of pressure on the rookies who will attend the team’s three day minicamp from Friday, May 11, 2012.
The coach, however, maintained that the new players will be given basic idea of National Football League (NFL) life so they would be able to learn things quickly when they start training with the veterans.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, the rookies reported to the team’s facility on Thursday to collect their equipments and they will officially being the minicamp from Friday.
After the minicamp, the rookies will be allowed to join the veterans for the offseason strength conditioning programme.
Later, the team will conduct a minicamp for veterans before the team’s regular training camp in the summer after which preseason games will begin.
Whisenhunt was of the view that the rookies will be informed about basics during the minicamp so when they train with the veterans during the organised team activities (OTAs) they would know at least something.
The head coach maintained that there was no use of rigorous workout or training in the absence of the senior players.
Whisenhunt said:
“You want to give them the basics, so when they get to the first day of OTAs, that’s not the first time they have seen the offense or defence. They will get a chance to learn very quickly from the veterans, how we do things, how we practice, but at least
they will have some kind of starting point.”
The Cards selected seven players during the 2012 draft. Later, they signed 17 more players who had failed to attract interest from any team.
All those players including a few others will be participating in the minicamp and the head coach thinks that the camp will help players know each other. He also said that it will also be a test of their abilities.
According to Whisenhunt:
“Now, they can be themselves.”
He added:
“It’s good to see how these guys handle this situation by themselves, see how they adapt, see who takes a leadership role. It’s a great tool.”
