Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt disappointed with team’s defeats – NFL News
After getting off to a remarkable 4-0 start, Arizona Cardinals have regressed badly, losing four games in a row to stand at 4-4 after Week 8.
Head coach Ken Whisenhunt is unable to understand the reason behind this slump, but he knows that if the team keeps on going this way, the Cards might not be able to qualify for the playoffs this season.
Cardinals have made a few changes of late. An injury to quarterback Kevin Kolb paved the way for healthy John Skelton to take back the starting role, but his presence has not helped the team.
Although Kolb was also unable to stage impressive performances as the offence leader, the team was winning under him, apparently because the defence was good.
The defence is still better than the offence, but it cannot sustain pressure of supporting the entire side without having support from the offence.
This is something that is bothering the head coach, who has also seen a decline in performance of the defence in the last few games.
Cardinals sometimes manage to restrict their opponents from getting scoring opportunities, but the offence fails to capitalise on the advantage.
Their recent defeat, however, exposed the offence and the defence alike as San Francisco 49ers dominated them to get the sole lead in National Football Conference (NFC) West.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Whisenhunt has acknowledged that the team’s recent performance has also let the fans down.
He said:
“I don’t know what kind of message it sends when you do that. I don’t think these games have been a function of not being prepared. It’s not that we haven’t seen things that we’re ready for. It’s that we haven’t made the plays in the situation.”
Whisenhunt added:
“We’ve missed guys that are open. We haven’t caught balls. We haven’t tackled guys in the field, but we have made some plays. We’ve made enough plays to win four games. We just got to make more plays to win some more games.”
Cardinals are tied at second spot in NFC West along with Seattle Seahawks, while the division leaders are two wins ahead of them.
