Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt weighing Kevin Kolb and John Skelton for starting position
Arizona Cardinals’ head coach, Ken Whisenhunt, has said that quarterbacks, Kevin Kolb and John Skelton, have equal chance of earning the starting role in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season and that their performance during the training camp and preseason games will determine the future course.
He made these comments while talking to Jim Rome of Rome.
During the radio show, the head coach was asked about who the starting quarterback would be in the upcoming season – a question that has been asked even before the end of the last season.
At the moment, the Cards have four quarterbacks on their roster. They include Kolb, Skelton, Richard Bartel and the team’s sixth-round pick in the 2012 draft, Ryan Lindley.
While Lindley and Bartel are expected to serve at backup roles, the management has not yet made the final selection between Kolb and Skelton.
Last year, both, Kolb and Skelton, got the starting role. Kolb was initially the starter, but his injury allowed Skelton to get the role.
Both quarterbacks played relatively well, but were unable to live up to the expectations. As a result, the team also decided to pursue Peyton Manning after his release by Indianapolis Colts this offseason.
However, Peyton did not agree joining the Cards and the management now has an option of selecting from the available players on the roster.
While answering the question, Whisenhunt appreciated the skills and talent of both Kolb and Skelton and responded by saying:
“That's the question that's going to be answered through the workouts this spring and in training camp this summer. They've both been working hard at it. It's been good to get out on the field and actually work on techniques and fundamentals with these guys.”
The head coach added:
“At times last year they both showed they can do good things. But consistency at that position is something we've got to improve on. So hopefully the competition between both of them will sharpen up one of them enough that he'll be a good starter for us.”
By the looks of the things, Kolb is, at the moment, favourite to get the starting role, but if Skelton manages to impress the coaches during the next two months he might become the starter.
