Arizona Cardinals release tight end Todd Heap – NFL News
Arizona Cardinals released their injured tight end Todd Heap and signed Kory Sperry on Tuesday.
Heap sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in Week 2 game against New England Patriots, and sat out of the games since then.
He has got eight receptions for 94 yards in this season.
Cardinals signed a two-year contract with Heap on July 31, 2011. He played 10 games last season and had 24 receptions for 283 yards and one touchdown.
According to Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt, Heap returned in practice session two weeks later, and the coach was looking at the player’s performance keenly, which was “healthy scratch”.
Whisenhunt said of Heap:
“Well, he’s got to show us in practice that he’s full speed enough to be able to go, and that hasn’t been the case.”
According to official website of Cardinals, while sharing his views about release, Heap said:
“There’s always a lot more that goes into any injury, but it’s not for me to comment on. It’s not for me to raise as an issue. I just have to let people think what they think and worry about what I can do.”
He was drafted by Baltimore Ravens in first round as 31st overall pick of the 2001 National Football League (NFL) draft. He played with the team until Week 13 game of the 2009 season.
He played 120 games of his career with Ravens. Later on, he was released on July 28, 2011.
Neither Whisenhunt nor Heap gave more details about this release.
On the other hand, Sperry was signed by Miami Dolphins in the 2009 season and he played eight games with the team.
In 2010, he was signed by San Diego Chargers and played a total of 23 games in the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Overall, he has got eight receptions for 136 yards and a touchdown.
Cardinals started their season with winning four straight games, but have lost eight straight games after that.
Cardinals are standing at the bottom of National Football Conference (NFC) West. They are going to play next game against Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, December 9.
