Arizona Cardinals yet to name starter for New England Patriots game – NFL News
Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt has not yet announced the starting quarterback for the game against New England Patriots this Sunday, as both John Skelton and Kevin Kolb await the coach’s decision.
Skelton, who had been named starter just before the start of the regular season, injured his ankle in the season opener against Seattle Seahawks and was replaced by Kolb.
It is expected that Kolb will start for them for a few weeks unless Skelton is hundred percent fit. However, some recent developments suggest that Skelton might not take long to recover.
On Wednesday, Kolb practised with the first team and Skelton did not practise at all, but Whisenhunt still did not say anything about the starter. The coach, however, seems satisfied with the recovery progress of Skelton.
Whisenhunt said:
"We've still got some days. John's continuing to improve. We were lucky that it was a low ankle sprain and he's getting better. So we'll see how it goes as the week progresses."
Although Kolb had lost the starting quarterback competition, he came out as hero after replacing Skelton in the season opener. The Cards were trailing when Kolb took charge of the offence and he provided the game-winning touchdown to silence his critics.
Cardinals were the last team in the entire league to announce starting quarterback for the regular season and it does not come as surprise to anyone that Whisenhunt is again taking his time to name the starter for the next game.
Even the players do not see any problem in it as they are used to it. Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald said of the situation:
"It's not much difference for us. This is like regular training camp. We're used to the competition switcheroos. We're conditioned for this so I think we're going to play this to our advantage."
A day earlier, Cardinals President Michael Bidwill had confirmed that Kolb would be the starter against Patriots. When Whisenhunt was asked about it, he said:
"He said that? I think we've still got some days until we play. I know he was excited by the way Kevin played, and deservedly so. Kevin did a nice job.”
