Arizona Cardinals yet to name starting quarterback – NFL News
Against all the expectations, the Arizona Cardinals have not yet named their starting quarterback for the 2012 regular season, making themselves the only team in the entire National Football League (NFL) that has not made up its mind about the starting quarterback.
When head coach Ken Whisenhunt spoke to media on Monday, August 27, 2012, it was expected that he would name the starter. However, he did not do that and with just one preseason game left for the Cards, it is still unknown who will lead their offence in
the regular season.
Whisenhunt said to media personnel:
"I have the sense that everyone is expecting a starting quarterback announcement today. We don't have one for you."
The Cardinals are going to face Denver Broncos in their preseason finale this Thursday. Kevin Kolb and John Skelton are competing for the starting quarterback job, and by the looks of the things, no one has yet been able to impress the management so as to
be named the starter.
Interestingly, the Cardinals might not introduce both the quarterbacks against Broncos. This gives an opportunity to rookie Ryan Lindley, who was selected in sixth round of this year’s draft, to start the game against Broncos.
However, he might still not get playing time in the regular season. Even if the rookie performs well against the Broncos, he will not be considered for the starting quarterback role, Whisenhunt has confirmed. The head coach said:
“I want to make sure I'm clear on this, Ryan Lindley is not going to emerge from this game as our starter no matter how he does."
Meanwhile, Whisenhunt said of the idea of not introducing Kolb and Skelton against Broncos:
"I don't know how long Denver is going to play their starters. So as far as evaluation of the quarterbacks and trying to make it a level playing field, as for the number of reps and who they are playing against, I don't know how much that would serve with
John or Kevin out of this game."
Now that Kolb and Skelton are not going to play against Broncos, the coach has to make a choice based on the evaluation he has already done. The head coach will have a final look at the two quarterbacks during their next practice session before naming the
starter.
