Arizona Diamondbacks Ian Kennedy feels mechanics of golf and pitching similar – MLB News
The Arizona Diamondbacks' starting pitcher Ian Kennedy is playing golf lately to loosen his muscles ahead of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
During the play at Waste Management Phoenix Open Pro-Am, Kennedy had a brief discussion session with the reporters who asked him a couple of interesting questions regarding all sorts of topics relating to his next season preparations and level of expectations.
Kennedy was pretty concise while talking about his aspirations for next season and how he thinks that 2012 will be a great year for his game and also for the Diamondbacks.
However, interestingly, playing golf, he gave his analysis regarding the similarities with baseball and golf. He stated confidently that these two games are pretty similar especially the mechanism of golf and of pitching is quite similar.
Kennedy said, “We can talk about the mechanics of golf and of pitching, and it's almost the same thing, their hips when they coil up and our hips when we coil up, when we bring our leg up and start firing for home. ... Our hips open up first and our chest stays closed, and then it fires."
Ian added, “Sometimes I think you see the younger golfers, they hit the shot they want and it doesn't end up the way they wanted it, they get so frustrated about it that it messes up their next shot. For us, it's the same thing.”
Apart from comparing the two games, Kennedy also showed his commitment with the Diamondbacks where he has been playing for the last two years.
He told the reporters that he is also preparing hard for the next season. Kennedy further commented to the reporters that he is training at his native town in Salt River Fields and is feeling very constructive towards next season.
Last season playing almost 33 games for the Diamondbacks, Kennedy managed to pitch with an ERA of 2.88 and a 21-4 win loss record. He had 198 strike-outs and a 1.09 WHIP as his career stats are consistent pace with a 3.65 ERA along with 31-18 win loss record, 409 strike-outs and 1.21 WHIP.
