Arizona Diamondbacks: Regular season results – MLB August 2011
After reaching an impressive 59-49 win-loss record at the end of July 2011, Arizona Diamondbacks were hoping to get to the top of the Wild Card standings table with consistent performances in the month of August as well. With a superb 2-1 series win over
Los Angeles Dodgers, the Diamondbacks had ended the previous month on a very positive note.
In a three match series against San Francisco Giants, the Diamondbacks displayed some high quality baseball. Securing comfortable wins in the opening two games, Kirk Gibson and his men earned their first series victory of the month in great style. In game
one, Ian Kennedy struck-out seven in eight innings as he won his fifth straight start of the season. Kennedy’s sensational performance also helped his team pull within one game of the World Series Champions Giants in the division race.
"I think this series is very important," Kennedy said. "You want to stay close. You don't want to let them creep away."
He's been outstanding," manager Kirk Gibson said. "He did exactly what this club needed tonight and pretty much commanded the game."
The Diamondbacks outclassed the Giants in almost all areas in game two to take a decisive 2-0 lead in the series. Paul Goldschmidt hit his first home-run of his baseball career to lift his side to first place in the NL West with San Francisco Giants. It
was a remarkable achievement by Kirk Gibson’s side considering the poor start they had to their regular season campaign.
"To come up here in this environment and do what he's done is a huge lift for us," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said.
Diamondbacks were unable to maintain their form in a three game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, losing two out of three meeting to suffer their first series loss of the month. However, they came back strongly in their next four match series against
the Houston Astros. Trailing 1-0 in the series, the Diamondbacks showed amazing character, team spirit and fighting abilities to win three straight games and secure an emphatic 3-1 series win.
In game two, Justin Upton hit a wonderful home-run with three hits and he drove in four runs as the Diamondbacks crushed the Astros 11-9 in a thrilling encounter.
The Diamondbacks ended the month with victories over New York Mets, Washington Nationals, San Diego Padre and Colorado Rockies to improve their win-loss record to 78-59.
The team was beginning to surge and get some definitive victories against some of the top tier teams in the League. Building some much needed confidence, the team were looking strong to carry their winning momentum forward into the next month.
