Arizona Diamondbacks: Regular season results – MLB June 2011
After giving an incredible performance in the month of May 2011, Arizona Diamondbacks were to maintain their great form to get to the top of the Wild Card standings. With series wins over Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, Minnesota Twins, Colorado Rockies
and Houston Astros, Kirk Gibson and his men were looking in supreme form.
Although, the Diamondbacks made a poor start to their first four match series against the Washington Nationals, they forced their way back into the series with a sensational 4-0 effort in game two. Outplaying their opponents completely in game three, they
secured a crucial 2-1 lead, going into the fourth and final game of the series.
Joe Saunders was absolutely brilliant with the bat and he had four hits to lead his side to a deserving 2-0.
"With his experience, he's wiggled out of a lot of those situations and he did it again tonight," Diamondbacks’ manager Kirk Gibson said. "We'd prefer to not have those situations early, try to correct that somehow, but Joe has been very good at that."
However, the Diamondbacks failed to live up the expectations in game four as they were unable to make the most of their opportunities. Washington Nationals, on the other hand, grabbed opportunities with both hands as they gave the Diamondbacks a run for
their money in a convincing 9-4 win, which also levelled the series at 2-all.
The Diamondbacks suffered a rare series loss against the Pittsburgh Pirates, losing three straight games for the first time in four weeks. However, once again, Kirk Gibson’s side showed amazing fighting abilities and determination as they bounced back brilliantly
with a crushing 2-0 win in final game to end the series on a positive note.
Chris Young hit a two-run home-run in the eighth inning for Arizona and pitchers combined for a five hit shut-out in a consolatory 2-0 win.
"The pitching staff's been doing such a good job," Young said, "and the last couple games we haven't been able to put the runs up for them, and we've kind of put them in some situations they probably shouldn't have been in in the first place. We probably
could have put up more runs."
In a four match series against the Florida Marlins, the Diamondbacks came back from 1-0 down to record an emphatic 3-1 series victory. The Diamondbacks continued their impressive run throughout the month of June. With a 3-0 win over Kansas City Royals, they
improved their win-loss record to 42-34, which was a great achievement, considering the kind of start they had made to the regular season. The Diamondbacks were beginning to gather themselves and surge forward.
