Arizona Diamondbacks: Regular season results - MLB May 2011
Arizona Diamondbacks had a tough time finding their form in the month of April 2011. With a poor 11-15 win-loss record, things were looking very dark for Kirk Gibson and his men. Hoping to achieve impressive results in May 2011, the Diamondbacks made a decent
start to their first three match series against the Colorado Rockies.
In game one of the series, the National League West team looked in supreme form as they clinched a nail biting 4-3 win to take a 1-0 lead. Kirk Gibson and his men had a very aggressive plan for the Rockies as they rallied past their opponents to gain a psychological
advantage in the series.
"Our plan is to be aggressive when we can," Arizona Diamondback’s manager Kirk Gibson said. "When things aren't working the conventional way you try and push the issue sometimes, and it worked."
Despite having the momentum on their side, in the following game, the Diamondbacks fell short of their targets by a large distance. The hitters failed to convert easy scoring opportunities and Colorado Rockies battled back to level the series at 1-all.
The Diamondbacks were unable to handle the pressure in their next three match series against San Diego Padres. Failing to handle the pressure, Gibson’s side made critical mistakes which let the opposition team get off to a flying start. The Diamondbacks
showed great determination, fighting abilities and mental strength to pull off a sensational 6-0 win.
Justin Upton smashed a two run homer and Daniel Hudson won his third straight to lift their side to a much needed victory. Holding San Diego to only five hits in nine innings, he was wonderful in the pitching department of the game.
"This ballpark plays so big at night that you just want to go after these guys," Hudson said. "They're a pretty scrappy team so they're obviously not going to beat you with home runs too often so you just go out there and throw strikes, and the rest takes
care of itself."
Although, the Diamondbacks put a brilliant fight in a three match series against San Francisco Giants, they were outclassed in finer details of the game. A 3-0 series loss damaged their win-loss record to a further 15-21. However, following that series,
Kirk Gibson and his men raised their game to an entirely new level as they won the next fifteen games in the month of May, which improved their win-loss record 30-25. With series victories over Minnesota Twins, Atlanta Braves, Colorado Rockies, Houston and
Florida, the Diamondbacks ended the month in an incredible fashion.
It looked as if the Diamondbacks were beginning to surge and just at the right time.
