Arizona Diamondbacks: Spring Training results – MLB 2011
Arizona Diamondbacks had a forgettable start to their Spring Training campaign as they wasted a large number of opportunities in their opening game to let San Francisco Giants clinch a thrilling 7-6 victory. In the following game against Colorado Rockies,
the Diamondbacks failed to cross the finish line once more as they suffered another demoralising 8-7 loss.
Looking to find their lost form, the Diamondbacks adopted a very aggressive approach in their next game against the San Francisco Giants. Holding their nerves, Kirk Gibson and his men finally managed to get their first win of the season.
Pablo Sandoval hit his second home-run of the season to lift his side to a much needed win.
"He's on a mission to get back to his form of a couple of years ago," Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy said. "I like the way he's shown up in camp. He's just got a great look about him."
"Tony Abreu had a really good at bat," Diamondbacks’ manager Kirk Gibson said. "He's been a little jump at his previous games.”
However, the Diamondbacks were unable to maintain their good form in their next match against Colorado Rockies, losing 6-5 to the NL West team. It was a very disappointing defeat for the Diamondbacks considering the hard work they had put in each game since
the start of the season. Team manager, Kirk Gibson was still hopeful and he aimed to turn things around for his team with a more workable strategy in their upcoming games.
Against Seattle Mariners, the Diamondbacks looked in much more control of their game play as they outclassed the opposition in almost all departments of the game. Aaron Heilman struck-out two in three perfect innings. Arizona’s reliever created all sorts
of problems for the batters as he pitched with great control and firepower.
"Heilman was awesome," Diamondbacks’ manager Kirk Gibson said. "He was pounding the zone. He's certainly going for it. He was very sharp."
Arizona then lost three consecutive games, which pushed the panic button inside their camp. Although they floored the inform Texas Rangers, the overall quality of their game play had been very unsatisfactory since the start of the training session. On March
18, the Diamondbacks secured an 8-5 win over the Mariners to end their nine match losing streak. Kirk Gibson’s side ended the session pretty poorly as well. With only 12 wins in 39 games, the spring session proved to be disastrous one for the Diamondbacks.
The team understood that they would have to work extremely hard to pull things together as the regular season was beginning. Arizona was looking to build some much needed confidence into the team.
