Arizona Diamondbacks beat Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 – MLB Recap
Xavier Nady and Ryan Roberts hit back-to- back homers, as the Arizona Diamondbacks held on for a 4-1 victory over Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-1, in the rubber match of a three-game series, at Dodger Stadium,
Los Angeles, CA on Sunday.
Ian Kennedy (4-1) went six innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk while fanning eight for Arizona, which took its second consecutive victory after a five-game dropping streak.
Ted Lilly (3-4) gave up four runs on five hits and two walks. He also struck out five in six innings for Los Angeles, which has lost two consecutive games after three wins in a row.
Los Angeles loaded the bases in the first inning, but James Loney flied out and Dioner Navarro struck out, making Los Angeles 3 for 30 with the bases loaded.
The Dodgers had runners in scoring position in the first inning. Jamey Carroll and Aaron Miles got the inning started with back-to-back singles and Matt Kemp walked two batters later to load the bases
with one out. But Loney flew out and Navarro struck out to end the inning.
Nady put the Diamondbacks on top by hitting a two-run homer and Roberts followed with a solo shot in the second inning. Chris Young later hit a sacrifice fly to score Miguel Montero to provide the
Diamondbacks an early four-run edge, 4-0.
"Drew had a good at-bat in front of me, and then I saw a couple of pitches and obviously got something I could handle," said Nady, who struck out three straight times after his home run. "Lilly was
tough on me after that, and tough on everybody. He just had that one bad inning."
Jamey Carroll led off the third with a double and scored on an Aaron Miles’ RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-1.
After Miles' single, Los Angeles did not have a base-runner until pinch-hitter Juan Uribe walked with one out and third baseman Casey Blake, shortstop Rafael Furcal and outfielder Marcus Thames, used
three consecutive pinch-hitters in the seventh inning.
Closer J.J. Putz gave up a Loney double to get the ninth inning started and Uribe worked a one-out walk to bring the knotting run to the plate. Putz then got pinch-hitter Rod Barajas to fly to deep
centre and Jerry Sands to pop out to second to earn his ninth save of the year.
"The at-bat before, he was struggling to throw strikes. So I was trying to just look for a strike and not go out of the zone," Barajas said. "I knew hit it good, but I wasn't sure how the ball would
carry. Usually in day games, it carries pretty well. I tried to put a good swing on it, but I didn't quite get the head of the bat out quite enough."
