Arizona Diamondbacks’ catcher Miguel Montero ends contract talks – MLB Update
The Arizona Diamondbacks’ talented catcher Miguel Montero is hoping a long contract with the franchise from where he started his career. The potential talks of contract extension were in the air since the last season ended, but lately news is coming as both sides have now ended these talks until after the season.
The Diamondbacks General Manager Kevin Towers explained why at the moment both sides could not reach an agreement and said, “We weren't able to find any common ground. My desire, as well as Miggy's desire, with an important season coming up and our first game here on Saturday, is to kind of put it behind us until the end of the season. We'll address it at that point in time.”
Later Montero said, “I don't put it that way. Like I said, they're going to be my priority. This is a business. If it's my last year, I'll have to move. It's part of the game. I do have a lot of confidence. I've got to go out there and prove it again.”
Looking at Montero’s perspective, he has been around in the Diamondbacks’ roster for almost last five years now. His priority of being in Arizona and playing in their Major League baseball franchise is somewhat related to his past seasons performances. During every season, whenever he did perform well, the organisation certainly has been more than gracious to him. With all those incentives and perks, he has pretty much developed a level of inviolability and belief in the Diamondbacks. This is now proving a factor as Montero does want to go somewhere else in the League.
On the other hand, the Diamondbacks also see his position and past performances with great respect and considered giving him a potential long contract.
The only thing that has created slight argument between Montero’s agent and the Diamondbacks’ management is the fact of new season which is approaching fast as well. The management argues as let the 2012 season finished first in order to get good results from extension discussion afterwards. In the meanwhile both sides are hopeful and optimistic about the talks which will succeed without any complexity next year.
