Arizona Diamondbacks defeat Cleveland Indians 6-4 – MLB Update
The Arizona Diamondbacks staged a strong comeback to defeat the Cleveland Indians 6-4 on Tuesday, June 28 at Chase Field in Phoenix Arizona.
Having lost the first game on June 27 after a tough fight, the Diamondbacks stamped their authority at Chase Field on Tuesday night, in what was a high-quality team effort. Both teams were equally matched in pitching yet again but some solid hitting from
Arizona tilted the balance to their side.
The Cleveland Indians added runs in the third and fifth innings helped by Shelley Duncan and Lonnie Chisenhall to set up a two-run lead with the Diamondbacks still to open scoring.
The fight-back from Diamondbacks was led by Gerardo Parra who executed three hits in the game. He went on to score two runs, his first coming in the fifth game. The Diamondbacks levelled the scoring in the sixth innings courtesy Kelly Johnson’s ruthless
hit, resulting in his 13th home-run of the season. The hit narrowly missed the 400-feet barrier, ending at 399-feet.
With the scores even, Arizona continued their hitting momentum and added two more runs in the eighth inning. Parra and Johnson were again amongst the scoring, both adding one run each. The Diamondbacks were now two-runs clear of their opponents at the end
of the penultimate innings.
The Cleveland bull-pen was apprehensive with two runs required to level scores and the last inning to go.
Carlos Santana’s hit silenced the crowd as they saw the ball fly out of the park. J.J. Putz could not handle the pressure and leaked a second run in his inning that he pitched as Asdrubal Cabrera scored to put the Indians level yet again in the nail-biting
encounter. For once the Indians felt that they can now contain the Diamondbacks and then score to seal the game.
It was all down to Tony Sipp as he came to pitch for the Indians in the ninth inning. He has been a reliable pitcher throughout but with pressure mounting, it was a different ballgame altogether. Wily Mo Pena was at the plate for the Diamondbacks and he
has proved his mettle time and again. He has been connecting well recently and he rightly did so again.
Pena hammered Sipp for a 370-feet home-run, recording his third of the season. The game had virtually ended when Ryan Roberts chipped in with a run to take the score at 6-4 and end the game which can easily be termed as a classic encounter. Sipp could not
hold his accuracy and lost the game, his first this season.
The three-game series is now level at one game apiece with the third game scheduled for Wednesday, June 29. It can be expected that the game will be nerve-racking, just as the first two games have been.
