Arizona Diamondbacks defeat Houston Astros 8-5 – MLB Update
The Arizona Diamondbacks wrapped up the four-game series with 3-1 victory on Thursday, August 11 as they beat the Houston Astros 8-5 at Chase Field.
Houston Astros’ offence was relatively successful in confining the Diamondbacks’ offence, their own hitters got an advantage and had a 5-1 lead by the end of seventh inning, something that the relievers could not maintain in the end of the game.
It was with the game-ending three-run homer of Chris Young – that too in the 10th inning, that the Diamondbacks concluded the four-game series with 3-1 win.
Wednesday’s game began with both the starters of the respective teams’ pounding the offence. Brett Myers tossed strong innings against the Arizona hitters, while Joe Saunders pitched equally effective pitches to disallow any Astros’ hitter go for hit.
However, Astros was successful in scoring the first run in the third inning when Carlos Lee singled to left. With the 1-0 lead to their favour, Houston’s Brett Myers pitched some of the best innings to carry on the momentum.
J.D. Martinez scored a two-run RBI to make it 3-0 for Houston while Carlos followed with another single to take the lead to 4-0 against the seemingly feeble Diamondbacks’ defence, something that was to be compensated by a strong offence.
Willie Bloomquist was the first to single for the Diamondbacks. But Jose Altuva of the Houston Astros brought home another run in the seventh inning to take the lead to 5-1. As the Diamondbacks seemed unable to stage a comeback, the offence suddenly sparked.
Ryan Roberts scored a single and Miguel Montero followed in the eighth inning just when Myers seemed to be going well with his pitches. Their individual singles gave the Diamondbacks a 5-3 score by the end of the eighth inning.
While Mark Melancon was supposed to contain the Diamondbacks’ offence, Paul Goldschmidt hit a homer to level the score by the end of the ninth inning, throwing a new flavour in the already exciting game.
J.J. Putz was able to pitch a strong 10th inning against the Astros’ hitters, as he did not allow even a single hit in the inning and kept the score level. His scoreless inning paved the way for the Arizona hitters to do the needed.
Once Jeff Fulchino came on the mound to pitch the tenth, he awaited a big surprise. As the score stood level, Chris Young hit the decisive hit. His three-run homer brought the Arizona Diamondbacks a seemingly impossible 8-5 victory in the 10th
inning even though it was Houston who dominated the game in the first half.
The Diamondbacks put in an amazing performance as they managed to fight back against Houston to take a much needed victory.
