Arizona Diamondbacks defeat Milwaukee Brewers 7-3 – MLB Update
Justin Upton had two hits and homered on Tuesday, July 5 to help the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-3 at Miller Park.
Zach Duke threw seven effective innings to guarantee the team’s victory.
The three-game series’ second encounter, first of which was clinched by the Diamondbacks by 8-6, witnessed another epic performance by the Arizona’s offence, constantly supported an equally effective defence.
The Diamondbacks laid a solid foundation for a strong game in the 4-hit four-runs first inning of Randy Wolf. Miguel Montero was the first to homer followed by individual singles of Xavier Nady and Gerardo Parra.
Having established a 4-0 lead, the Diamondbacks’ Zach Duke was hardly generous in providing an opportunity to the Brewers’ hitters to score. Prince Fielder was the only hitter to score a single in the first inning to make it 4-1.
Justin Upton homered in the third inning to help build the Diamondbacks scorecard with enough runs to make a big lead. Parra’s homer then made it 7-1 for the Diamondbacks against a straining Randy Wolf.
Having played 86 games in the 2011 Regular Season, Upton had two hits to take it to 98 hits with .299 average having 44 RBIs and 14 home-runs.
“I would've loved to have been picked to be in it just for the sole fact that it's in my stadium and hopefully a lot of our fans are there," Upton said. "I'd rather hit them here than in the derby. There's one good thing about it: I won't have to practice
my home run swing."
Once the lead was effectively established, rest of the responsibilities were shouldered by Zach Duke whose fastballs were a constant challenge for the under pressure Brewers’ offence.
This was one of the rare starts for Duke who hardly had a good start in last 12 games. The innings that he threw throughout the game would eventually become his very first win in the 12 games he had played.
"You had to bring that up, didn't you?" Duke said. "I know I've had some bad games here, but I've had some good games here. It just hasn't worked out that I got the win out of it. But I finally did, so that monkey's off my back."
Prince Fielder homered in the sixth and Corey Hart scored a single in the eighth to reduce the Diamondbacks’ lead to 7-3, but Alberto Castillo threw a scoreless 9th inning to perfect the 7-3 victory for the team.
This was the second win for the Diamondbacks against the Brewers in as many as games of the three-game series. Provided they keep their performance, they are poised to sweep the series on Wednesday.
