Arizona Diamondbacks defeat Philadelphia Phillies 7-5 – MLB Update
The Arizona Diamondbacks put in a good performance as they defeated Philadelphia Phillies 7-5 at Chase Field, Phoenix on Tuesday, April 26.
After their previous loss against the Diamondbacks, it was predicted that the Phillies would bounce back in no time given that they just finished a four game sweep of the San Diego Padres. The Phillies just could not keep up with Arizona on Tuesday night.
This is the second defeat for Philadelphia against the Diamondbacks and it also marks the second series that the Phillies have lost this season.
Ian Kennedy was the key player the last time the Phillies went up against the Diamondbacks, as he outpitched the magnificent Cliff Lee who is one of the top pitchers in Major League Baseball. In this game, Roy Oswalt, another one of the pitchers that makeup
the world class pitching line-up of the Phillies shocked everyone by allowing five earned runs in the duration of only three innings. This is the most number of earned runs that he has allowed since he started playing for the Phillies.
Oswalt’s streak of ten consecutive winning decisions was halted by Daniel Hudson as he doubled in two runs which won the match for the Diamondbacks. Oswalt wasn’t his usual self as he could only managed three innings where he gave up more runs than anyone
expected him to. He had no strike-outs, allowed five runs on six hits and allowed one walk.
Previously in his first four starts he had given up a meager total of five runs in 24 innings since the season began. He has not been the losing pitcher since July of 2010.
The pathetic state of the Phillies’ offence could be judged by the fact that Matt Francisco’s two run homer that he belted out against David Hernandez in the ninth inning marked the first time that the Phillies had managed to score more than four runs in
their last 14 games.
From the Phillies’ side, Placido Polanco singled towards left-field in the first innings as Shane Victorino scored. This marked the first run for them, as the second came in the third innings as Ryan Howard singled towards right centre-field and Polanco
scored while moving Jimmy Rollins to third base. In the sixth inning Gload singled towards the centre and Francisco scored effectively moving Orr to second base. The home-run came in the ninth inning by Francisco and Howard scored.
As for the Diamondbacks, they were on fire. In the second inning Gerardo Parra singled towards right-field while Miguel Montero scored and Juan Miranda moved to third base. Parra took the opportunity to advance to second, advancing on the throw. Next, Daniel
Hudson doubled and Miranda and Parra scored. In the third inning Drew singled as Johnson scored. Ryan Roberts homered in the sixth inning and in the seventh Upton singled whereas Johnson scored.
