Arizona Diamondbacks defeat San Francisco Giants 5-2 – MLB Update
Arizona Diamondbacks put in a brilliant performance as they beat the World Series champions San Francisco Giants 5-2 in the first fixture of three game series at AT&T Park on Monday, August 1.
The Diamondbacks struggled throughout the game except the sixth inning, in which they destroyed the Giants confident line-up touching five runs against Matt Cain. Diamondbacks went under one run deficit in the bottom of the first inning and they remained
under strong sinkers of Matt Cain, but the fifth inning proved stunning for them.
Miguel Montero singled to right-field, allowing Justin Upton to nip the scoreless game and Chris Young to move to second. Ryan Roberts singled to left-field, giving Chris Young room to steal a run for a 2-1 lead. Montero was on second base and Ryan Roberts
on first, when Gerardo Parra drove in a single to get third run in the sixth inning. Then Willie Bloomquist helped Roberts and Parra to generate two more runs on his infield single to short-stop.
"It was nice to come in and get Game 1," D-backs leadoff man Willie Bloomquist said. "Hopefully, it kind of sets the tone for the rest of the series that we beat one of their horses today and our guy pitched pretty dang good, too."
It also proved helpful for Ian Kennedy to grab his 13th win of the season. The Diamondbacks’ starter Kennedy allowed his second run in the seventh inning to the Giants’ Aubrey Huff on a one-run homer. He also yielded six hits and one walk but
his seven strike-outs combined with dazzling hitting in the sixth to help the Diamondbacks clinch their 60th game of the season.
"He's been outstanding," manager Kirk Gibson said. "He did exactly what this club needed tonight and pretty much commanded the game."
Giants’ Matt Cain had given just three hits before five-run sixth inning that caused him a humiliating defeat in just over five innings. The sixth inning dropped him from a brilliant to a wounded pitcher, who has also given three walks over a long 105 pitches
five innings. His five strike-outs before the sixth inning could not save him from his seventh loss in 2011 regular season.
San Francisco strived hard to rebound but botched the attempt despite having dazzling pitching performances by Jeremy Affeldt, Santiago Casilla and Sergio Romo. Each remained hit-less over their short spells after the sixth inning. It was the Giants 48th
loss, one less than the Diamondbacks in this season. Arizona managed to put in a tremendous effort as they restricted the Giants’ powerful offence from getting back into the game. In the end, the Diamondbacks succeeded in taking a much needed win over the
World Series champions.
