Arizona Diamondbacks defeat Washington Nationals 8-1 – MLB Update
The Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Washington Nationals 8-1 to win the four-game series by 3-1 on Thursday, August 25 at Nationals Park.
Having had a six-game skid previously, this was the third consecutive victory for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Interestingly, this winning track came into its material form after the earthquake that shook the stadium prior to second game. This, the bench coach, referred to with humour apparent in his statement.
"It's amazing what an earthquake will do," said bench coach Alan Trammell as he walked down the hallway outside the clubhouse. "It shook us up."
But on professional level, it goes beyond any shadow of doubt, it was the brilliance of the play that won the Arizona Diamondbacks their consecutive wins, leaving the otherwise well-equipped Washington Nationals into tatters.
"We could have folded," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "But I felt we hung together very well. We seemed to be recharged. The no BP has worked good for us. It got the guys off their feet, off the field. Their legs have come back, and we feel good going
home."
Wade Miley gave an outstanding performance into this victory. He began the game with scoreless inning and continued it right into six innings where he did not allow any run apart from five hits that he gave up, also having four strike-outs.
The game remained scoreless for quite a while until Chris Young put an amazing competitive twist into it. Entering into the sixth inning, Chris Young homered to left against John Lannan to drive in two runs.
Having faced a virtual drought of runs in the game and to avoid absolute calamity, Michael Morse was the one to score the only run for the Washington Nationals in the seventh inning. He singled to centre to bring the lead down to 2-1 for the Nationals.
But the eighth inning proved a complete game-decider. First, it was Miguel Montero who scored a run to deep-right following the two-run homer coming off Paul Goldschmidt’s bat that took the Arizona Diamondbacks’ lead up to 5-1 in the 2-hit three-run inning.
David Hernandez pitched a shut-out eighth to keep the lead intact followed by that of Washington Nationals’ reliever Henry Rodriguez who also was in for big hits. Chris Young drove in a single, Goldschmidt went for another and Aaron Hill scored the eighth
run for the Diamondbacks.
It did not take Micah Owings long to formally turn the result of the game into the Arizona Diamondbacks’ favour in the ninth inning with a complete shut-out, winning the game by 8-1 and also scoring a 3-1 victory in the four-game series.
